8 Killed by pro-Ouattara Forces in I. Coast

Troops loyal to President Alassane Ouattara last week killed at least eight people in several incidents in Ivory Coast, the U.N. mission in Ivory Coast (ONUCI) announced Thursday.

In incidents in and around Abidjan and the centre-west of the country, "members of the Republican Forces killed at least eight people and wounded several others," the head of ONUCI's human rights division, Guillaume Ngefa, told a news briefing.

"At least 30 people were arbitrarily arrested and detained. Some of the victims were subjected to acts of torture and bad treatment," Ngefa added.

The U.N. has on several occasions denounced atrocities committed by the Republican Forces in areas that are home to backers of former president Laurent Gbagbo.

Gbagbo was arrested on April 11 after more than four months of post-electoral crisis and 10 days of heavy fighting in the economic capital Abidjan.

Pro-Gabgbo forces have also been accused of atrocities in the West African country, where he lost an election in November last year after 10 years in power, but refused to stand down.
