March 14: Bir al-Abed Blast Linked to Hizbullah's Fighting in Syria

The March 14 General Secretariat condemned on Wednesday the blast that took place in the Bir al-Abed neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs on Tuesday.

It said in a statement after its weekly meeting: “We have long warned of the consequence of Hizbullah's fighting Syria.”

It warned that this meddling will have consequences on all sides “without exception.”

“The fighting has caused various crises that are threatening to destroy Lebanon,” it added.

On this note, the general secretariat stressed the need for all sides to respect the memorandum that the March 14 camp presented to President Michel Suleiman and which calls for deploying the army along the Lebanese-Syrian border and Hizbullah to withdraw its fighters from Syria.

In June, around 50 signatories called for “Hizbullah's full and immediate withdrawal from Syria pending a solution to the problem of its arms.”

They claimed that the party's role in the fighting is a clear violation of the Constitution, the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and international resolutions.

At least 53 people were wounded in the explosion that was caused by a booby-trapped vehicle in the Bir al-Abed neighborhood, which is a Hizbullah stronghold.
