Detained Member of al-Asir's Group Referred to Military Prosecution
One of the detained members of Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir's group was referred on Thursday to the Military Prosecution on charges of smuggling arms to Syria, reported the National News Agency.
Military Examining Magistrate Judge Fadi Sawan referred the suspect on charges of also carrying out terrorist attacks.
The suspect was found to have accompanied al-Asir to his visits to Syria.
He was arrested during the recent clashes in Abra near the southern city of Sidon that took place on June 22 and 23.
An arrest warrant had previously been issued against the suspect.
Later on Thursday, First Military Investigation Judge Riyad Abu Ghida interrogated nine detainees from the Abra clashes, releasing three and issuing arrest warrants against six.
State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr had charged last week 27 people, 10 of them in absentia.
Those in custody were interrogated earlier this week by First Military Investigation Judge Riyad Abu Ghida.
Al-Asir and the singer-turned Salafist Fadel Shaker were among the 27 people charged by Saqr.
If convinced, the suspects face the death penalty.
The fighting in Sidon was sparked when al-Asir's supporters opened fire on an army checkpoint, leaving around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunmen dead.
The gunbattles concentrated in the area of Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque and nearby buildings in Abra.
Al-Asir, a 45-year-old cleric who supports the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad, is no where to be found along with Shaker.
