New Syrian Air Raid on Arsal

A Syrian warplane violated Lebanese airspace at dawn Thursday and fired two rockets at an area in the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said that the air raid took place around 1:30 am. It did not cause any casualties.

Syrian fighter jets and helicopter gunships have in recent months carried out several raids on Arsal, a town populated mostly by Sunnis who support the uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Arsal, which lies 12 kilometers from the border with Syria, has been used as a conduit for weapons and rebels to enter Syria, while also serving as a refuge for people fleeing the conflict.

The Syria conflict erupted in March 2011 following a bloody regime crackdown on Arab Spring-inspired democracy protests.

Since then, there have been several spillover attacks in Lebanon involving both sides in Syria.
