Head of Security Council: Lebanese Govt. Should Respect International Commitments

The President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July, Peter Wittig, stressed the importance of Lebanon respecting its international commitments.

He told the daily An Nahar in remarks published on Sunday that the government of Prime Minister Najib Miqati should adhere to international agreements.

Wittig also advised the Lebanese to maintain their country’s interests.

There is an ongoing debate at the committee drafting the government policy statement over the phrasing of Lebanon’s commitment towards the Special Tribunal for Lebanon with some sides fearing that the country’s abandonment of the clause would lead the country towards a confrontation with the international community.

On the developments in Syria, Wittig warned of “severe” repercussions that may impact the region, adding that it is unacceptable that the Security Council remain silent over the unrest.
