Movie Review: 2 Guns (2013)

Written by Anthony Sargon

With a summer movie season packed with superheroes, monsters, sci-fi, and tons of CGI, it's nice to get a more traditional action movie to mix things up a bit. Starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, "2 Guns" is an entertaining flick that boasts two strong lead performances and a nice dose of humor, and while the plot gets a little convoluted near the end, it's still a consistently good time.

Robert Trench (Denzel Washington) and Michael Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) are both pretending to be criminals; Trench is an undercover DEA agent, and Stigman an undercover NCIS. Neither of them knows the other is undercover, and they're both after the same man, lord Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos). After the pair fails to acquire a large sum of cocaine that would have put Greco behind bars, Trench and Stigman decide to take matters into their own hands, and as I'm sure you've guessed, things don't go too smoothly.

As always, Denzel Washington gives a great performance in the lead role, and he's been matched up nicely with Mark Wahlberg, who once again proves that he can handle comedic roles. He was great in "The Other Guys" and "Ted", and I wouldn't mind seeing him in more roles of this nature. The movie also stars Paula Patton as Trench's ex-lover, James Marsden as Stigman's NCIS supervisor, and Bill Paxton as a crazed CIA agent.

Director Baltasar Komakur keeps the film moving at brisk pace, and although things can get needlessly complicated near the end, you're rarely lost or confused. The action sequences are also handled with a lot of skill; there isn't much shaky cam (always a plus) and most stunts rely on practical effects rather than a bunch of CGI, which is nice to see.

Anthony's Verdict:

All in all, "2 Guns" is a fun action flick with two very charismatic lead performances. If you're expecting more than that, you may come out of the theater slightly disappointed. If you're just looking to kill a couple of hours with some mindless entertainment, though, you can't go wrong with "2 Guns".

Numerical Score: 7.5/10
