Movie Review: The World's End (2013)

As far as I'm concerned, the summer movie season ends with "The World's End", and that is in no way a bad thing. Serving as the third chapter in director Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy, the movie is a blast from start to finish, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more imaginative movie this summer.
The story revolves around five childhood friends (Gary, Andy, Peter, Oliver, and Steven) who are trying to relive an epic pub crawl that they failed to complete back in high school: 12 pubs, 12 pints, one crazy night. As you'd expect, they end up in a much bigger situation than they could have ever imagined; their hometown has been taken over by an alien robot race, and the rest of the planet is in their crosshairs. It's up to our five drunken heroes to save the day, and the results are hilarious.
Simon Pegg (Gary) and Nick Frost (Andy) are back in the lead, along with familiar faces and some new ones as well. Martin Freeman (Oliver) is great as always, and Paddy Considine (Steven) and Eddie Marsan (Peter) do a fantastic job as well. Rosamund Pike plays Sam, Oliver's sister, and she's also quite good in the role. There are plenty of small cameos and appearances that I won't spoil here, but they're very amusing.
The movie is extremely funny and original, and fits in beautifully with "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz". The movie has energy, a great sense of quirkiness, and a crazy dose of imagination, and I can't wait to see what Edgar Wright does with Marvel's "Ant-Man" in 2015.
The action scenes are beautifully conceptualized and shot, and again, are so imaginative that you won't be able to watch them without beaming like an idiot. Nick Frost's character kicks as much ass as the Incredible Hulk, which is never a bad thing.
The film also has something important to say; it grieves how boring and familiar our society has become, and it celebrates being different and unique, and it's appropriate that the film itself is one of the most unique you'll watch this year.
Anthony's Verdict:
"The World's End" is a great capper to a wonderful trilogy, as well as a great summer of movies. Watch it, you will not be disappointed.
