Six Dead on Turkey-Syria Border in Warehouse Explosion

An accidental explosion in a scrap metal warehouse killed six people in Syria just a few hundred meters from the Turkish border, media reported.

A Turk and five Syrians died in the mortar explosion on Tuesday caused by a shell going off without warning, television stations NTV and CNN-Turk reported.

The group were completing a transaction for the sale of scrap metal collected in Syria and destined for Turkey, and were unaware the explosive was lying close by, the reports said.

The explosion took place in Azmarin, northern Syria, near a border crossing into Turkey's Hatay province. In the last two and a half years, thousands of Syrians have fled civil war through the crossing.
