Suleiman: Formation of New Govt. Won't Change Political Status Quo

President Michel Suleiman stressed on Tuesday that it has become necessary to form a new government that tackles the people's daily concerns, especially in light of the advent of winter and the start of a new academic school year.

He said before his visitors: “The formation of a new cabinet will not change the political status quo or the situation around us.”

Officials must realize the “sensitivity” of the current phase and drop preconditions over the formation of a government, he demanded.

This should lead to the formation of a new cabinet that includes all powers, he added.

The government should be able to reinforce political and security stability, said Suleiman.

Speaker Nabih Berri had recently proposed the resumption of national dialogue at the Baabda Palace for a period of at least five consecutive days to discuss the form and policy statement of the future cabinet.

He said Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam should attend the all-party talks that bring together the rival March 8 and 14 alliances.

Salam has meanwhile said that the formation of a cabinet should be limited to the premier and president.
