Downpours Swamp Lebanon Roads, Cause Chaos

Roads across Lebanon turned into swamps as Lebanon witnessed Autumn's heavy rain, causing bumper-to-bumper traffic blocking drivers in their vehicles and causing property damage.

The Civil Defense “struggled” to free those who were stuck in their vehicles.

The heavy rain turned roads and highways across the country into swamps as sewers flooded.

Caretaker Public Works Minister Ghazi Aridi and caretaker Finance Minister Mohammed Safadi had traded salvos recently over the funding of ministry projects.

According to Aridi the lack of funding prevented his ministry from cleaning the sewers and drainage pipes.

Experts estimate Lebanon annually has an average 2.1 billion cubic meters (73.5 billion cubic feet) of renewable hydraulic resources, more than half of which is dumped straight into the Mediterranean for lack of any strategic planning.
