Ali Eid Evades Questioning over Tripoli Bombings

Arab Democratic Party leader Ali Eid on Tuesday evaded a summons to undergo questioning by a military tribunal judge over his alleged aid to a suspect in the mosque bombings of the northern city of Tripoli.

Eid's attorney handed First Military Investigation Judge Riyad Abu Ghida a report claiming that the suspect cannot attend the questioning session for medical reasons.

Lawyer Huyam Eid submitted the alibi to Abu Ghida, who referred it to the military prosecutor, Judge Saqr Saqr, for the appropriate response.

On Thursday, Abu Ghida issued a subpoena against Eid, a former MP who is from Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect.

He has been charged along with his driver Ahmed Ali, who is under arrest, with helping Ahmed Merhi escape justice by smuggling him to Syria.

Merhi is the suspected driver of the explosive-laden vehicle that blew up near al-Taqwa mosque.

Huyam Eid called on Tuesday for Ali's release and said the military tribunal should withdraw the arrest warrant issued against the Arab Democratic Party leader.

The twin car bombings that targeted the Sunni al-Taqwa and al-Salam mosques on August 23 have left hundreds of casualties.

Separately, General Prosecutor Samir Hammoud tasked on Monday the head of the Criminal Investigation Department to question Eid's son, Arab Democratic Party Secretary-General Rifaat Eid over his recent threats against the Internal Security Forces.

On Saturday, Eid slammed the ISF Intelligence Bureau as a “spy agency working against Lebanon's interests.”

Yet we need him alive because we need to hear that Bachar via Hezbollah agents supplied the explosives. Ladies and gentlemen, the hunt is open!

if they are guilty they have to pay, there is no justification for targeting civilians. but i'm bothered by the fact that ISF used threat of torture to extract confessions from the driver. from the start this case sounds fishy. the first "spontaneous" witness blamed it on the syrian regime, but then failed the lie detection test.
now the driver was made to point his employer out under threat of torture... what is the ISF doing? we want the truth and justice, no matter who the guilty party is, not a political trial who will do everything it can to pin it on one side.

making parodies of institutions and diverting them to serve partisan interests is what weakens the state, because if they takes side nobody will trust or support them anymore.

Thumb _mowaten_ 12 November 2013, 14:03

having said this there is no excuse for eid to evade the questioning. i dont know if it's legally doable but maybe he should ask for human rights watch observers to attend the questioning, to make sure he doesnt get tortured.

@mowaten "i'm bothered by the fact that ISF used threat of torture"

Really ?

How can you support pro-Syrian (Gov) and pro-Iranians and be bothered by the use of "torture" ? Those guys basically invented torture ... and you want their representatives in Lebanon to rule the country.

You're a human oxymoron (no pun intended).

Thumb _mowaten_ 12 November 2013, 14:22

ps: i am bothered by the use of torture, from whichever side it is, but this was not my point above. i wont bother trying to explain it to you, because i think you intentionally miss the point systematically, but readers with brains will know what i meant.

The thing is Mowaten : I don't support Saudi and US ... this is your fabrication.

Unlike you, I'm all pro-Lebanese and believe that anyone who is pro-Saudi / Iran / Syria / US is a traitor to Lebanon.

If I had to choose a "lifestyle" and "Values", I would side with the US / EU anytime vs Iran / Saudi / Syria...

Those countries understand how to enslave their people by making them believe they are free and indeed they are. They are just slaves of their banking system and entertainment industry ...

This is a joke of a state! If it were anyone other than HA and its allies, you will see the State flex its muscles and send Shamel Roukoz and the maghaweer brigade to arrest the criminal.

Thumb FlameCatcher 12 November 2013, 12:30

Yalla !

Did he escape with the help of Hezbollah ? I hear they are experts in evading justice and hiding and harboring criminals and killers !

Really M8, this is the people you support and want to give control of our country to ?

Shame on you sheep for supporting such criminals ! You have no right to make any requests regarding elections, politics, electricity, oil, peace, stability, israel.

Your leaders are traitors for supporting and facilitating such crimes and you are sheep whose opinion count as much as a fart !

it was stated that what we have is a state within a "weak" state.

I see M8 commenters have lost their tongue... or maybe Sehnaoui forgot to pay the internet bill ?

I wonder what excuse they are concocting now to justify "Yet another obstruction of justice" by their people ! They are probably waiting for Aoun and Nasrallah to issue statements they can repeat like robotic parrots !

you weren't complaining when the army was beating up an unarmed man+ recording the horror on camera in june, I'm referring to Abra Cadabra of course.

Thumb irus_da_virus 12 November 2013, 17:13

If Eid is so tough and so adamant in his belief that ISF is an Israeli tool and that he would never be questioned by them, what on earth compelled him to make up such a juvenile excuse of being sick. If your sending an apology to the ISF that means that you have inherently accepted their jurisdiction. You can either be a man and stick to your position or shut up, but acting like a child evading a school exam is really silly.

I wonder if the Army will grow a pair and confront the pro Syrians the way they did to the anti-Syrians...
