Suriname Probes Leader's Son over U.S. Hizbullah Charges

Suriname has launched a formal investigation into the son of President Desi Bouterse after he was charged by U.S. authorities with attempting to funnel weapons to Hizbullah, officials said Thursday.

Dino Bouterse is currently in U.S. custody following his extradition from Panama in August.

U.S. justice officials last Friday hit Bouterse with further charges, accusing him of attempting to supply weapons to Hizbullah, and offering to allow the party's fighters to train in Suriname.

Suriname's Procurator-General Subhas Punwasi said in a statement that officials were now investigating whether Bouterse broke local laws.

Punwasi said officials may request information from foreign countries as part of the probe.

According to an indictment unsealed in in a New York federal court, Bouterse was arrested after a meeting with undercover U.S. agents posing as Hizbullah associates to discuss hosting 30 to 60 militants in Suriname for training and operations.

Bouterse was given millions of dollars to allow dozens of purported Hizbullah operatives to use Suriname as a base.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison on the Hizbullah charge and a maximum sentence of life in prison over cocaine trafficking and brandishing a weapon.

Bouterse was previously jailed in 2005 after a judge convicted him of leading a gang that trafficked cocaine and weapons.

When he was released after serving three years of an eight-year sentence, his father gave him a job as director of the country's anti-terrorism unit.

Bouterse was elected president by parliament in 2010 but led a ruling military junta from 1980-1987, during the former Dutch colony's civil war.

"U.S. agents posing as Hizbullah associates" framed him. how does that involve Hezbollah?
since they now openly admitted they have "U.S. agents posing as Hizbullah associates" i bet they are linked to other cases, such as the Bulgaria bombing or the guy who was caught in Cyprus, and said he got instructions from an "unknown" member of Hezbollah who used to only appear masked to him.
That's what i thought at the time, the tip-off was that he got caught for noting licence plate numbers. i mean, what police would arrest someone just for noting numbers, unless they already know why they are arresting him?

hahahahahahahahahahaha Good GOD man. You know the tragedy is not the fact that you state childish things as facts but the fact that you actually reach an audience that gobbles this up.
"U.S. agents posing as Hizbullah associates" framed him? perhaps you should go back and look up the definition of the word framed. this my propagandist friend is actually called a sting or an operation. HA is labeled as a terrorist organization and the reason the US can use such a trip for an operation is because HA is continuously looking for such "services" otherwise the sting or "frame up" as you miserably attempt to portray it would not work. BTW- that was pretty decent attempt at trying to introduce your own evidence into terrorist activities that implicate HA. maybe you could've used this as well to prove that it was US agents that attempted to assassinate Boutrous Harb

I agree. It is about a non-Lebanese big shot providing weapons to an Iranian militia.

So where are the charges against the US, KSA, Qatar and others for breaking international laws against supplying arms, takfiris and training in Syria?

I'm sure that the HA would gladly depart Syria if this US-KSA backed terrorism was stopped and the foreigners pulled from the country. HA only entered Syria when it became apparent that foreign countries were involved.

The only twisted thing over here it seems is your brain.

What exactly do you benefit from protecting Hezbollah all the time ?

Wouldn't you like to have a country where there is no need for Hezbollah to hold weapons ?

Wouldn't you like to live in peace ?

Does you path to peace involve a stronger Hezbollah ? Giving them control of your country ? Does your path to peace involve more wars, internal and external ?

How can you keep defending these liars who have overstepped their "mandate" of Lebanese resistance. who are now concerned about liberating Syria and Palestine using your country as a base ... ?

You cannot complain about terrorists Islamists in Lebanon when you are supporting other terrorists Islamists.

There is nothing twisted about this story !

Does Hezbollah train terrorists outside of Lebanon : YES
Does Hezbollah smuggle weapons : YES
Does Hezbollah smuggle drugs : YES

All the above is proven !

lol flamecatcher, you still dont know the meaning of proven do you? it's a propaganda war, it's the US officials' job to make accusations every day, but they never provided proof.
the best link they ever establishe was a man who was part of a mexican cartel, who knew another man who knew another man who knew someone considered close to hezbollah. wow, now i have to watch all the friends of my friends' friends, just in case one of them is a criminal and i end up being accused of complicity.

Thumb _mowaten_ 15 November 2013, 18:08

phoenix read well, at no point was Hezbollah involved in any way. what the US agents did is called entrapment and they posed as Hezbollah.

Missing peace 15 November 2013, 20:57

of course, everyone knows that hezbollah is a divine party that would never get involved in anything illegal... if said otherwise it is all lies and conspiracy....

yeah, we know the song mowaten....

Thumb FlameCatcher 15 November 2013, 20:11

the very fact that they used Hezbollah as bait proves their involvment in criminal activities beyond war and weapons.

Put the issue of weapons aside one second ...

Do you want to let drug dealers run your country ???

I don't ! The money and corruption behind the drug industry makes militias and weapons look like bakhchich ...
