Charbel Launches Stage-Two of Security Plan in Tripoli, Calls for Cooperation with Security Forces

Caretaker Interior Minister Charbel called on Saturday on the resident of the northern city of Tripoli to cooperate with security forces to maintain security in the city, urging officials to resolve their political disputes during a national dialogue session.

“The Lebanese have sharp political disputes, which is deeply reflected on Tripoli that is paying the price,” Charbel told reporters at the Tripoli Grand Serail during the launching of stage-two of a security plan to be implemented in the city.

He hailed the efforts exerted by officials and city figures to implement security in the city.

Charbel expressed hope that the security chaos in the northern city would reach an end and politicians would resolve their disputes during all-party talks.

He pointed out that the security plan will be implemented in all the areas witnessing tension, including Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood.

“The security plan aims at preventing the residents of Tripoli from engaging in armed battles,” Charbel added.

Tripoli is Lebanon's second city and is the scene of frequent Syria-linked battles, that pit Sunnis from Bab al-Tabbaneh against Alawites in Jabal Mohsen.

Most Sunnis support Syria's revolt against President Bashar Assad, while Alawites, who belong to the same Shiite-offshoot sect as Assad, support his regime.

The latest fighting ended when the army deployed along Syria Street, which separates the two districts and acts as the makeshift frontline.

Tripoli suffered horrific car bomb explosions near two mosques in August, killing 45 people.

He stressed that the end of arms spread across the country require a “strong political chaos.”

Charbel also urged media outlets to cooperate with security forces to maintain stability in Tripoli instead of “inciting rift.”

The authorities have implemented a similar plan in the Hizbullah stronghold of Beirut's southern suburbs where several blasts have also left hundreds of casualties.

I know that this may sound drastic, but how about........the Government of the Republic of Lebanon gives orders to the Lebanese Armed Forces that anyone, anywhere in the country, who shoots at the armed forces gets shot back at with the intent to kill.

Let us see just how determined and comprehensive these security plans are.

The situation in Tripoli has spiraled out of control due to political cover.

The situation in tripoli has deteriorated because some are above the law and a simple doctors note is enough to shut the govt up. Maybe I should go out. Set some bombs all over the place and provide them with a doctors note. Think I can get away with murder and treason? As long as a single party is armed others will, and have the right to, arm. Once you hizby lovers get that through your heads and insist on the LAF, however strong or weak, being the sole guarantor of law, order and defense. The sooner this country will start crawling out of the abyss.

Ask around ... How many people REALLY want to disarm Hezbollah when tens of thousands of armed and rampaging Qaeada and Islamists are within kilometers of Lebanon?

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 17 November 2013, 07:55

about 50% of the country... that's how many.. HA is a shia fundamentalist party, while al Qaida is a sunni fundamentalist party.. most sunnis in Lebanon are against al Qaida and will fight them along with our army.. so will the shias and the Christians.. stop putting excuses to hold onto HA arms.. says nothing about you other than you are conditioned and prefer a militia over the armed forces.
Nobody said we would not fight them if they came.. you just choose to think that.
and let us not forget that sunni fundamentalism in Tripoli and the north began (recently) with HA hijacking their rights... so if HA wants to make this country tick according to their strength of arms.. this is what happens..
weapons can be brought in quicker than you can believe.. so choose your path.. the disarmament of ALL militias.. or the arming of all and the path to war..no other ways about it.

@ arzak-ya-libnan

Actually about 15% of Lebanon would want HA to disarm right now ... that would be Mustaqbal ... and that is because they think they will have political and security cover should the KSA decide to spread its terrorism directly into Lebanon. They will be very disappointed when their trust in Bandar turns into death and destruction.

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 17 November 2013, 12:34

you are a bigger fool than I thought if you think 15% want to disarm HA and ALL militias in Lebanon.

Nothing useful to say besides your conspiracy theories.. argue the facts instead of making them up.

Thumb lebanon_first 17 November 2013, 14:20

Mckinl. above 50% definitely want to disarm HA.
All sunnites.
Most christians. (Those who side with HA are there because they like to be with the strong pary. Not because HA is doing the right thing)
Some chiites

Those who do not want to disarm are some chiite bullies who are proud of being the ones controlling the country.

Wait it up. The wheel will turn, and HA's weapons will be soon a bad memory. Like Syria in Lebanon is a bad memory.

Arzak is 100% correct.

No need for stage two plan. What we need, is shoot to kill plan.

This is the best plan I have ever heard of. But then where should they be dumped? Albania refused to dispose of Syria's chemical weapons and I assume they will refuse these deadlier "biological" ones. Perhaps they should be sent to Saudi Arabia. I heard they're good for the growth of dates. takfir

Show some respect dude ,why do you attack the whole Alawites community?
