Suleiman: There Is No Independence When Lebanese Groups Fight in Other Countries' Wars

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

President Michel Suleiman stated on Thursday that there is no independence in the country when armed groups get involved in a neighboring country's war.

“There is no independence when some Lebanese factions disregard national consensus, risk Lebanon's stability and get involved in the fighting in a neighboring country's war,” Suleiman said in a speech he gave on the eve of Independence Day.

He added: “There is also no independence if security forces were not the only groups authorized to carry arms in the country.”

Suleiman considered that the national crisis that is paralyzing the work of the state's institutions “draws question marks around the meaning of independence, of democratic practices and of the Lebanese system and whether it serves the national interests.”

He urged political leaders not to allow vacuum in the states' institutions, stressing also on the importance of holding the presidential election on time.

“The coming months must not be a waste of time but an opportunity to reach consensus over an electoral law, to withdraw from Syria, to start national dialogue sessions, to adopt administrative decentralization and to form a committee to follow up on the issue of those missing in the war.”

He called for “returning to the rule of law, abiding by the constitutions and becoming under the authority of the state and its institutions in order to avoid strife.”

He said: “We stress on our national unity and on religious coexistence. I call on you to contribute to the building of a just and capable state that the younger generations aspire to have.”

“I am confident that Lebanon cannot conform with extremist and totalitarian policies.”

In his “last” Independence Day speech, the president listed the efforts he has exerted to gather international support for Lebanon, in order for the country to be capable to deal with the numerous challenges facing it.

“We have sought to place Lebanon again as a power on the international scene, and as an independent and sovereign country to attract investors,” Suleiman said.

He continued: “Diplomatic efforts exerted have contributed to the formation of an international group of countries that are seeking support for Lebanon, to endorse its economy and find solutions to the refugees' crisis.”

“We held an international summit in Kuwait to share the financial burdens of the refugees' crisis and another meeting will take place at the beginning of 2014.”

He warned, however, that the Lebanese state “will not hesitate to take any decision if its existence was threatened, in case the international community does not fulfill its duties towards the refugees' crisis.”

any evidence that m14 as a group is financing fsa or just some empty m8 rhetoric ?

Missing peace 22 November 2013, 01:32

"M14 has found itself cheering and worshiping nusra and qaeda. "

where did you see that other than in your deranged mind? LOL

Missing peace 22 November 2013, 11:26

then it is a sign of pure stupidity to say that those posting here are the official voices of M14....
but no wonder coming from you....

Missing peace 22 November 2013, 01:34

you DO support assad little worm... always here to defend his army and justifying his bombings on lebanon...

and as you assume that M14 supports alqaeda then let your opponents assume you support assad... or your logic does not go both ways? oh! yes i forgot: M8 doube standards as usual....

Missing peace 22 November 2013, 01:37

empty M8 rhetoric... easy to say and so practical to justify hezbis in syria (childish way of thinking that weak minded people usually adopt to appear to know things...)

sure if M14 was financing the war then we would see the fsa well equipped.... and it would mean M14 is really really rich to finance a war against a nation! LOL

Missing greatpierro 22 November 2013, 03:27

this is your wishful thinking again and again; please tell us where in this forum any m14 supporter has ever voiced any support for islamist extremists? If we are against the tyranic asad regime it does not mean that we are supporting another to be tyranic regime.

Then cancel the ridiculous parade since everybody knows that it is a big joke and a huge inconvenience that makes their days a nightmare only to have to listen afterwards to a few talking heads who are incapable of pronouncing Arabic properly as if they were taught their native language by Lawrence of Arabia.

Blah Blah Blah...Talk is Cheap
You couldn't say it straight to their faces
Hey all of you ..Give up your Arms ..Hand them over right now to the Army..!
Right...Like that's could happen
So why talk talk talk...Blah Blah Blah
There are talkers and doers
Then you have Abraham Lincoln...He was Both..It takes Sacrifice to Save a Nation !
Sorry President Suleiman you are not Abraham Lincoln.

The President gave a good independence speech, he is 100% correct. Unfortunately Mr FlimFlamThrower does not approved :-(

Thumb general_puppet 22 November 2013, 07:47

FlimFlamThrower, the only block that declared war and mobilized it's gun men is the Iranian militia… the same ones that say Assad is essential to their existence and will stay deployed in Syria as long as they see fit… the same ones that for 13 years keep coming up with reasons to not disarm and take direct orders from the Ayatollah.

Should we by now understand that Lebanon had not been and will never be a country as we now have it. Since its independence, Lebanon had lived more than two thirds of its independence in wars and the rest one third in disagreement over how Lebanon is governed and who should govern it. This Mantra of unity and co-existence is not anymore acceptable. But when Lebanon is small to partition amongst its religious groups, It's future will always be in the hands of the regional countries whose main aim is to keep on destroying Lebanon for their sake. If the Lebanese politicians are unable to fathom this, then lebanon will one day cease to exist as it is with all its factions and parties.

. The true danger comes from the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Over a million? Among them how many are already armed? And how many more could be armed and manipulated from outside? There is no independance when Lebanon is so weak that it cannot control such a flow. They are mostly Sunnis. And this will disrupt the equation on which Lebanon is based. This is the true danger. Of course Hizballah's action in Syria is bringing us terrorism and tens if not hundreds of innocent casualties. But the danger of the Sunni syrian refugees will simple bring the end of the Lebanon we know and we love
