President Michel Suleiman received on Saturday cables from U.S. President Barack Obama, British Premier David Cameron, and a number of world leaders on the occasion of Independence Day.

Obama expressed to Suleiman his country's commitment to supporting the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in order to put an end to impunity.

He also said that the United States will continue on pressuring the international community to provide Lebanon with the necessary support in helping it deal with Syrian refugees.

For his part, Cameron praised Lebanon for what it has achieved in seven decades, despite the volatile situation in the Middle East.

He noted that Lebanon country still faces several obstacles, most notably its hosting of Syrian refugees.

The British prime minister stressed his country's support in helping Lebanon confront challenges and building a prosperous and stable Lebanon that can live in peace with its neighbors.

Obama also stressed his support for the International Criminal Court, which he said had demonstrated its capability to prosecute many dark-skinned persons. He said with a chuckle, "Actually, it's cheaper than the STL."

chris.... are you referring to the same International Court that sided with the Muslims of Kosovo against the Christian (Blond) Serbs Mr. Ashura guy.

That tribunal was a separate operation, as was the one in/for Rwanda. None of them seem to me to be legal entities. It is one of the basic characteristics of a sovereign state to try its own criminals. Imposing a tribunal on a state or region declares that it is officially a failed state. So the question here is about which failed states "the West" likes and which it doesn't. It seems Kenya is getting tired of being a failed state that "the West" likes.

Any favors for Lebanon by supporting the STL would be at the expense of Iran, Syria and HA (the accused in the crimes).
