Time magazine on Wednesday named Pope Francis its person of the year, saying that in nine months in office the head of the Catholic Church had become a new voice of conscience.

"For pulling the papacy out of the palace and into the streets, for committing the world's largest church to confronting its deepest needs and for balancing judgment with mercy, Pope Francis is TIME's 2013 Person of the Year," wrote managing editor Nancy Gibbs.

"Rarely has a new player on the world stage captured so much attention so quickly -- young and old, faithful and cynical -- as Pope Francis.

"In his nine months in office, he has placed himself at the very center of the central conversations of our time: about wealth and poverty, fairness and justice, transparency, modernity, globalization, the role of women, the nature of marriage, the temptations of power."

The runner-up for the accolade was NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, who has been granted asylum in Russia and with whom Time published an exclusive interview conducted over email.

I'm no Christian, and even less a Catholic, but this man certainly deserves this accolade. Had this world been a better place, he would have gotten away with the Nobel Peace prize as well. May the legacy of the rest of the years of Pope Francis I be as bright as his first one.

Baschar got "robbed", "again"? Well, on the one hand, I can kind of see where your logic comes from, since after all, the "prize" technically goes to the person who makes the "biggest change and fronts the headlines most and in the most significant way", and even Bin Laden was named Times' Man of the Year for 2001 even though he only managed to destroy seven buildings and kill less than 3,000 human beings; by comparison, ma byiswa dhifir îsba3 îjro la Baschar - who has managed to level a whole country to the ground and murdered the lion's share of the 125,000+ of the dead in Syria. But if you really want your overlord to win, why don't you try to advise him to actually do something good, even if for once it's good for the people of Syria and not just for him. Even Arafat managed to snag a Nobel prize for choosing peace instead of ego...
