Berri: Attacks on Army Threaten to Drown Country in Chaos, Turn it Into 'Jihad Arena'

Lawmakers on Wednesday quoted Speaker Nabih Berri as saying that recent attacks on the army “threaten to drown the country in chaos.”

“Targeting the army for being the unifying institution is the pinnacle of attacks on state institutions and it is a very dangerous development that jeopardizes stability and threatens to drown the country in chaos,” Berri was quoted as saying during his weekly meeting with MPs.

The speaker warned of “the menace of terrorist groups that are seeking to turn Lebanon into a jihad arena,” wondering “how can the Lebanese not close ranks and show solidarity to confront what is threatening their stability and unity.”

Berri cautioned against “the continuation of this grave security situation,” noting that “when the country is in danger, we must not remain silent over what's happening and we must say things as they are.”

In the afternoon, the parliament speaker met with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon David Hale and discussed with him the latest developments, in the presence of his media adviser Ali Hamdan.

In earlier remarks, Berri painted a gloomy picture of the security situation in Lebanon, also saying the political deadlock had no solution looming in the horizon.

In interviews with several local dailies published on Wednesday, Berri expressed fears over the security conditions after several attacks on the Lebanese army.

Berri described the situation as “not encouraging and not comforting.”

“Those working on spreading chaos in Lebanon are now targeting the military because it is making huge sacrifices to prevent such a chaos” from taking place, he said.

They seek to destroy the military institution, which is Lebanon’s only united front, he said.

There were near-simultaneous attacks on the army in the southern city of Sidon on Sunday night.

The army identified on Monday the assailants of one of the attacks but said two suspects have escaped.

Army Sergeant Samer Rizk was killed and three soldiers were injured in the assaults.

Two soldiers were also lightly injured on Tuesday when six rockets fired from the Syrian side of the border landed in the northeastern town of Hermel, one of them inside an army barracks in al-Dawra neighborhood.

The speaker also lamented in his remarks to the newspapers that the political situation has also been deadlocked.

He blamed the paralysis on the rejection of the rival parties to return to the dialogue table and the failure to form a new government based on the 9-9-6 formula.

Berri also criticized the March 14 alliance for rejecting the latest initiative he made to resolve the country's political crisis.

His proposal lied in approving the formation of a cabinet in which the March 14 and March 8 camps would get nine ministers each and centrists six, or to return to the dialogue table at Baabda Palace.

Let us be clear: in no way this comment is justification or anything of the like. this is only my analysis.

the army command has been the supporting arm of hizbushaitan in the eye of many in Lebanon and abroad:
- no arrest of ali and rifaat eid.
- free passage to hizbushaitan everywhere in and out of the country
- heavy handed on anybody else(i.e. sunnis)

it is logical the army is becoming the target of these extremists.
thank you hizbushaitan

When the Lebanese Army acts as a national army then by all means it will earn every citizen's respect and every sect's respect. The army is infiltrated by HA, acts according to HA wishes, and covers up for HA crimes. The army and its effective intelligence branch uncovers crimes in 24 hours when the matter concerns HA or its allies, even when it is a lowly family matter such as the Jammo murder case. The army knows where the criminals who assassinated Harriri reside and who is hiding them. They also know where Eid resides. When the army facilitates the sectarian war waged by HA in Syria, it cannot expect to be immune to retaliatory measures by the same people it is helping to murder. Allowing HA to go in and out of the border to go kill Syrians makes the army complicit in the crime.

You have had your way for to long. The patriotic factions in Lebanon will no longer be a party to you and HA's systematic paralysis of our governmental institutions, destruction of our economy, control of our army and engrossing us into illfated wars that reap nothing but destruction and death. You decided to take the reigns of government by force and it has been nothing but downhill ever since.
Why are you so eager now to involve all the other sects in your government, are you so deep in the shit that you want M14 to sit down with you and bail you out. Have you forgetten the one way tickets you issued. The day that M14 does so will be the day I turn against them.

To Both flame-thrower and mckinl..... Of course I am not happy the lebanese army is being targeted and attacked. I am more lebanese than you both claim to be. However, I do not live in a bubble and pretend that events are driven by some super natural force. My post is clear for you to read. As to civil war, yes I agree with you. If Lebanon were a Shia state as you are trying to make it, then the army can do what it pleases by covering up and facilitating HA activities. Unfortunately for you both, Lebanon is not and will never be a Shia state and no amount of arms will change this fact. There are other sects who will not accept where you and your hizb are leading this nation. Now, if civil war will make you see the other 16 sects and accept their rights, then so be it. Neither your rockets nor your arrogance will matter then.

Every lebanese citizen is responsible for his or her actions what ever their belief is, who ever commits a crime will eventually be caught and tried . self defence is a right but not to be abused or manipulated by anyone, if the army follows the rule of law it must be consistent and fair in all aspects of its conduct if the army is not consistent and fair then it becomes obsolete and lawlessness will rule lebanon which is what i believe is happening at the moment.
