ISIL Jihadists Seize 'Most' of North Syria Town

The jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has taken most of the town of al-Bab in Syria's Aleppo province after fighting with rebels, an NGO said Monday.

The advance by the group in the country's turbulent north comes after 10 days of fighting pitting moderate and Islamist opposition forces against the al-Qaida inspired organisation that has killed nearly 700 people.

"ISIL has seized almost complete control of the town of Al-Bab, northeast of Aleppo city," Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Agence France Presse.

"The sound of shooting can still be heard in Al-Bab, but it's not clear if that is from continuing clashes or mopping up operations," he added.

The town has been out of regime control for more than a year, but came under fierce aerial bombardment by government troops over the weekend.

The two-day wave of air strikes killed 50 people, according to the Observatory.

Elsewhere in the province, the Observatory said the rebel groups battling ISIL were progressing in the town of Jarabulus, near the Turkish border.

"Overnight, fighting continued in Jarabulus between ISIL and the Islamic Front and other rebel groups, with the latter progressing," the Observatory said in an email.

The fighting in Jarabulus resumed after a deadline given by rebels for ISIL fighters to withdraw from the city passed without them leaving, the Observatory said.

Fighting between ISIL and opposition forces also erupted again in the northwestern province of Idlib, where the rebels were progressing, and in Raqa, a northern ISIL stronghold where the jihadist group has largely held off rebels.

Jihadist foreign fighters were widely welcomed by Syrian rebels when they first entered the conflict, but have experienced a backlash against their reported abuses of civilians and rival rebels.

On Sunday, ISIL in Raqa issued a statement accusing opposition forces of fighting against it to please the West and other "apostate" nations before a scheduled peace conference in Switzerland this month.

Syria's regime and opposition are scheduled to hold talks in the town of Montreux beginning on January 22.

Wow, the world turned upside down, foreigners are now wresting control of Syrian territory from the Syrians, maybe Bachar Al Assad remains the lesser evil now for all Syrians.

Bachar is lesser evil than what or who?!?!?! Bachar is the worst option.

I hope this proves that the oposition is moderate and west will now support them logistically.

Thumb joker37 13 January 2014, 14:59

there are 3 opposition factions,
1) ISIS
2) Nusra Front
3) Islamic front
all three factions have openly professes their ultimate goal of establishing an islamic state in syria. what "moderate" faction are you talking about exactly? please elaborate
also regarding western support, you must not be a living creature because even dogs have been conditioned in pavlov's experiment yet you despite many many let downs by the west are not learning that they will always let you down.

The Syrian lackey states that "bashar has no business in lebanon" when in fact there is a written history of over 30 years of Syrian Ba'ath designs on Lebanon and the Lebanese. The Iranian stooge says, with a completely straight face, that bashar is the soundest option for Lebanon, he who sent Michel Samaha to assassinate the Patriarch.

The FSA still exists, and has the second largest amount of territory (among the rebels) after the IF. Your friend discounted them altogether, instead opting to portray the ANF and ISIS as two thirds of the rebels fighting on the ground, which is simply untrue, a bald-faced LIE.

Thumb joker37 13 January 2014, 17:15

what factions comprise the "FSA"?
the powerful factions have ALL left for the islamic front. ahrar al sham, suqoor al sham, ahfad al rasool, etc...
if you're such an expert of FSA let us know who still fights under their banner...

Thumb proudm14. 13 January 2014, 16:44

Thumb joker37 13 January 2014, 17:10

Thumb cedre 13 January 2014, 17:30

FSA/JAN liberated Raqqa, Deir zor and Aleppo and they liberated from FSA...
