Investigations are underway to determine whether a young man who hails from the southern city of Sidon is the suicide bomber who blew up an explosives-rigged car in the Bekaa town of Hermel, after preliminary investigations revealed that only one person was killed in the explosion.
“Preliminary investigations – which are being conducted by security agencies under the supervision of State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr – have revealed that only one person was martyred in the Hermel Square bombing that occurred yesterday,” state-run National News Agency reported.
“Human remains belonging to the driver of the booby-trapped car were also found and a sketch has been created and distributed to media outlets in a bid to identify him,” NNA added.
It said it is still unclear whether the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or that the car was blown up without the driver's knowledge.
The agency later reported that the army's intelligence directorate has summoned “the mother of H. Ghandour, who was born in Sidon, to perform DNA tests on suspicion that he is the Hermel suicide bomber.”
“The army's intelligence directorate is interrogating the sister of Lebanese national Hasan Gh., 20, who is suspected of being the Hermel suicide bomber,” al-Jadeed television reported earlier on Friday.
“He was a resident of Sidon's al-Fawwar area and he left his home 4 months ago,” it said.
LBCI television said “security agencies have created a sketch of the suspected Hermel suicide bomber according to the testimonies of the witnesses.”
“DNA tests showed that one person was killed during the Hermel blast and that all the human remains at the scene belonged to the suicide bomber and the victim Hussein Omar,” it added.

Mmmmmh there's a smell shoarma. It originates from restaurante alrayyan.

Although use of suicide attacks has occurred throughout recent history—particularly with the Japanese Kamikaze pilots of World War II—its main notoriety as a specific kind of attack began in the 1980s and involved explosives deliberately carried to the target either on the person or in a civilian vehicle and delivered by surprise. Following the success of a 1983 truck bombing of two barracks buildings in Beirut that killed 300 and helped drive American and French Multinational Force troops from Lebanon, the tactic spread to insurgent groups like the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka, and Islamist groups such as Hamas.
Iran and Hizballah introduced suicide bombing in the modern history.
