Al-Atrash Confesses to Prior Knowledge to Attacks Targeting Dahiyeh

Sheikh Omar al-Atrash, who is allegedly linked to the recent attacks in Beirut's southern suburbs, had confessed to moving two explosive-rigged cars to Beirut and his prior knowledge to the suicide attacks targeting Dahiyeh, a Hizbullah stronghold.

According to al-Akhbar newspaper published on Tuesday, al-Atrash, who was arrested by the Army last week, testified that he transported people and cars from the Bekaa border town of Arsal to Beirut and handed them over to culprits, however, he didn't know the details of their scheme.

Security sources told the newspaper that al-Atrash confessed to his prior knowledge to attempts to expand the scope of bombings in Dahiyeh and other areas.

“Al-Atrash transported Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian nationals” linked to the bombings plot, the sources said.

The newspaper described the Sheikh's confessions as “notoriously dangerous.”

Al-Atrash said that he had moved “a Grand Cherokee and BMW X5 cars to Beirut.”

He said that the two cars were relocated in a warehouse on the outskirts of Beirut's southern suburbs, which is owned by a man nicknamed as Abou Suleiman.

The Sheikh, who hails from the Bekaa Valley, admitted that Palestinian Ibrahim Abou Maaileq, known as Abou Jaafar, who was killed last week in armed clashes with the army in Chtaura, was responsible for setting a scheme to target Dahiyeh.

According to the daily, Abou Jaafar planned with another Lebanese man to send two suicide bombers to open fire on citizens using machine guns before blowing themselves up. After people gather around to save the injured an explosive-rigged car would then explode in the area.

The report added that al-Atrash presented “information of high importance” regarding the transportation of explosive-laden cars from Syrian territories to Lebanon via Arsal, adding that a Palestinian refugee camp has been used several times as a pit stop for suicide bombers and the booby-trapped cars.

Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon -- believed to be the local franchise of Syria's Al-Nusra Front, a jihadist rebel movement – had recently warned that attacks on Hizbullah-controlled areas will continue until Lebanon releases Sunni Islamist prisoners and the party withdraws from Syria.

Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon warned Sunnis against "approaching or residing in or near (Hizbullah's) bases, and (to) avoid gathering around its meeting points."

The war in Syria has inflamed sectarian tensions in Lebanon, with Hizbullah backing President Bashar Assad's regime and many Sunnis supporting the rebellion against him.

This Takfiri sheikh should never see light again.

Thumb Mystic 28 January 2014, 09:04

I believe he and the same salafis were responsible for the tripoli blasts aswell.

Thumb FlameCatcher 28 January 2014, 11:55

I believe Bashar el Assad is behind all bombings ... and manipulating all these groups.

Thumb Mystic 28 January 2014, 13:04

I believe Mr. Assad has enough problems in his own country to do anything like that, and he wouldn't. But ofcourse blind people full of hatred for no reason, will blame everything on Hezbollah, Syria, Iran. You would never dare to look at your own leaders horrible mistakes.

Thumb Mystic 28 January 2014, 13:06

Such as supporting the salafis in Syria to begin with, the M14 did that. They dragged Lebanon into the Syrian civil war, and after that, and long after the Al Qaeda and Al Nusra front got involved, then finally Hezbollah dispatched a small force that could bring back justice in the region.

Missing greatpierro 28 January 2014, 13:23

Maybe or maybe not. I know a salafist Cheikh in Syria who used to come especially to tripoli to coordinate with the salafist in tripoli. He was very close to Assad.

naharnet you should be ashamed to have censored this comment:

yes FC, i believe it too, because the tooth-fairy said it to me as well.

Thumb kanaanljdid 28 January 2014, 12:20

Mystic, do you think the man on your avatar is better than this sheikh?

Thumb _mowaten_ 28 January 2014, 13:10

no he is much inferior, akid kanaan! he didn't have the honor to gloriously blow up up civilians, only pathetically fought soldiers of the strongest army in the area, backed by the strongest army in the wolrd. and that bum had the nerve to also win it.

Thumb Mystic 28 January 2014, 13:11

Yes i believe he was much better. Because he would never target civilian areas, since it was against his principles & judgement.

Thumb Mystic 28 January 2014, 13:15

This so called "sheikh" no nothing about honor, I don't care which sect people belongs, innocents should never be targeted. Now don't give me this crap that the Syrian government bombs civilian areas, because they don't, but Al Qaeda does.

Thumb ice-man 28 January 2014, 13:40

well said @Kanaan.

Thumb ice-man 28 January 2014, 15:07

Dear Southern: Please, I urge you not to insult your fellow posters for merely voicing their reasonable and logical opinion. In Lebanon, unlike Iran, people are allowed to disagree. It is so unlike you to use such technique.

Thumb ice-man 28 January 2014, 15:08

if you plan to have a decent discussion although you don't agree, try to avoid the insults, the ones who resort to insults are losers and narrow minded. try next time!

Why can't the people who interviewed al-Atrash also interview Eid father and son for the Tripoli bombs?

Missing imagine_1979 28 January 2014, 14:11

No eid family (ali eid and co.) are to much respectable and clean to go to be interviewed by justice, u know ashraf el nass style...

Thumb Mystic 28 January 2014, 09:19

Because they were not responsible.

Thumb cedars2 28 January 2014, 09:22

Why cant they interview the suspects in the Harriri trial? Oh yes they are a "red line" "the hand that reaches out to them will be cut".

Default-user-icon setright (Guest) 28 January 2014, 15:24

Why so you talk to yourself so much? It's worrying

Default-user-icon Alexander (Guest) 28 January 2014, 09:40

This is how all attacks should be treated. We should hand by hand cooperate to interview the suspects... What is sad is that when it comes to Hezbollah suspects, the authorities suddenly become taxed of Zionist agents. And when the same authorities deal with Sunni suspects, they become credible. And you wonder why extremism is growing?

Thumb ex-fpm 28 January 2014, 11:42

Naharnet no doubt spreads sectarianism and hate. Why report a Sunni" sheikh did this or did that. I have never read on Naharnet any article that says a Shia or Christian or Druze person did something by referring to their sect. Actually, my observation is when it comes to Shia offenders Naharnet mentions them by initials, and people on this site have to guess.

Flatten the refugee camp in question and nuke Arsal the terrorist deb already. Also, support the rebelion as if I care, but take it to Syria and kill each other instead of suicide bombing civillians and LEBANON. Bunch of criminals and lunatics.
