Jabal Mohsen Man Shot and Wounded in Tripoli

Unknown gunmen shot a resident of the Tripoli district of Jabal Mohsen on Friday evening, in an assault that is likely linked to the wave of sectarianly motivated attacks that has rocked the city in recent months.

“Omran Suleiman was shot in the legs on al-Mallouleh road in Tripoli,” OTV reported.

But LBCI television said the shooting occurred in the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh.

It added that Suleiman “hails from Jabal Mohsen and was rushed to a hospital in Zgharta” for treatment.

More than 22 attacks have targeted Jabal Mohsen residents in several areas of Tripoli in recent months.

On Tuesday, two men were assaulted after their car entered Jabal Mohsen, a day after a resident of the neighborhood was stabbed and beaten up in nearby al-Qobbeh.

Sectarian tensions between Jabal Mohsen and the rival district of Bab al-Tabbaneh date back to Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war but have been exacerbated by the conflict across the border in Syria, where Alawite President Bashar Assad is battling a Sunni-led uprising.

The unrest worsened when twin bombings rocked two Sunni mosques in the city, leaving around 45 people dead and 500 others wounded. Several suspects from Jabal Mohsen have been accused of involvement in the bombings.

The two neighborhoods have been rocked by around 20 rounds of deadly sectarian fighting in recent years.
