Saniora Accuses FPM, Hizbullah of Hindering Cabinet Formation

Head of al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Saniora accused on Monday the Free Patriotic Movement of impeding the government formation with the help of Hizbullah, stressing that the two sides backed down on their commitments.

“All parties agreed to facilitate the formation of the cabinet, however, now some sides are obstructing the matter and imposing condition,” Saniora said in comments published in the Kuwaiti al-Anbaa newspaper.

He pointed out that ministries are not assigned to certain parties nor names, adding that this matter violates the constitution.

The lawmaker stressed that those who reject the concept of rotating portfolios toppled al-Mustaqbal chief Saad Hariri's initiative to share power with Hizbullah in an attempt to end a ten-month political deadlock.

He lashed out at the FPM, noting that “the party agreed on the formation of an all-embracing cabinet but backed down.”

Saniora urged President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam to take a final decision and form a cabinet.

“If a de-facto cabinet was formed then we'll see the developments from that point,” he added.

Salam, a 67-year-old moderate, was appointed in April two weeks after the resignation of Premier Najib Miqati.

However, Salam has been facing a difficulty in forming his cabinet over FPM Chief MP Michel Aoun's unswerving stance to retain the energy and telecommunications ministries and his rejection to adopt the concept of rotating ministerial portfolios.

Aoun has rejected the rotation of portfolios as part of a deal struck between the rival parties on the 24-member cabinet based on the 8-8-8 formula, hinting that he would pull his ministers out of it and drawing the support of his allies in the March 8 alliance.

Spot on Fuad.As we have all seen over the last two years, March 14 lacks the maturity and intelligence to govern a nation.

@ hanni
M14 lacks the arms and disloyalty. M14 is behaving in a civilized and patriotic way to spare the country another war. HA on the other hand is behaving like the school bully, flexing biceps while lacking brainceps. Martyrdom is HA's mantra and Khomeini is HA's guide (just like takfiris but Khomeini instead of Alqaeda)

I meant march 8.

they are not... and have not been since 2011.. and the country is worse off.. no doubt about that fact.

I am not a member of Ouwet or Kataeb, and I have no idea what relevance that has. March 14 represents 58% of the Christian's in Parliament, and that is the number you should be concerned with.

Abass claimed that Hezbollah and Aoun represent more than half of the people, and I pointed out that they FPM and Hezbollah actually represent less than 25% of the MP's in Parliament.

Truth hurts

FitThrower: remember when you admitted that Hezbollah killed Hariri???

Here's your quote below:

Quote from _-Flamethrower-_ 1/17/2014:

"i'm willing to say that hezbollah killed hariri. how will the lebanese deal with it? the same way they dealt with geagea killing rashid karami or the frangieh church massacre. they will come to the point where they need to understand that the page must be turned and that there is no way to govern in any cabinet or any parliament without hezbollah by your side. only when hezb itself decides its resistance and military are no longer needed, will it disband by its own accord and without anyone forcing it."

I'm proud of you, that was awesome.

Fifi.... allow me to summarize your previously quoted comments:

1. Yes, Hezbollah killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri
2. Let's just pretend it didn't happen
3. Let's also pretend that Hezbollah didn't kill Gemayel, Tueni, Kassir, Hawi, Eid, Ghanem, Eido, al Hassan, and Chatah
4. Let's pretend some more that they didn't try to kill Murr, Hamadeh, Chidiac, Shehadeh, and Harb
5. After all this pretending, let's allow the killers be part of the cabinet with the people they tried to kill
6. Let's allow Hezbollah to decide if and when they want to stop killing their political opponents
7. Let's allow Hezbollah to decide if and when they want to disarm

Just like The_Bore had to change his name recently after being caught lying about where he lives.

@Jaafar: Good morning to you too. I am shocked by your lack of online social skills and your constant bombardment of insults towards educated and intellectual posters on this forum including myself. You asked us, the young generation on this forum, to accept you as a father figure. Fine...! But, please lead by example, show compassion and understanding, teach and embrace the young people, make them look up to you, assume a leadership position . I am not going to vote you down hoping in doing so I will give you an incentive to reassess your behavior. Thank you

let us see now... this rotation formula was agreed to by HA and AMAL... and now THEY are going back on their commitments (SURPRISE!!!) but yet, somehow, you always manage to twist it to say that m14 are obstructing...
the allocation of ministries is still in negotiation phase and nothing has been written in stone.. BUT, what was written in stone and agreed to was the rotation... apparently HA and AMAL agreed to it without feeling the need to consult their ally the FPM.. maybe they should take it up with each other?

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 10 February 2014, 13:41

good to know that you consider the FPM's action spite...
if you are talking about the same thing as mc.. then again.. let them say we agree on the basis of rotation... BUT... we dont want both security portfolios under m14...
while i know you like to twist the facts to suit your needs.. the basis of this problem is HA and AMAL agreed to the rotation.. without consulting their ally..and now have the perfect excuse and the perfect pawn to obstruct the formation of this cabinet by saying that we have to stand by our ally... it has nothing to do with which portfolios are going to which side and to whom exactly as this is still in the negotiation phase.. and can be dealt with... the problem is Aoun and his refusal to rotate..

Thumb popeye 10 February 2014, 11:06

HA and Aoun are the main obstacle to Lebanon's future.

Thumb mckinl 10 February 2014, 11:11

Salam is the problem as he has shown he favors M14 and himself by taking not only the energy ministry but BOTH security ministries.

Salam and Sulaiman should name their cabinet and watch as most of the ministers resign immediately.

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 10 February 2014, 11:30

please try to read next time.. i said the allocation of ministries is still in the NEGOTIATION phase.. and it is not final... there are discussions and consultations before x ministry is given to either camp... and i am sure both camps have to come sort of agreement..
now if you can try... TRY to stick to the point.. and that is that HA and AMAL agreed to the rotation of portfolios... without consulting their ally... is that not their problem.. and now that they have changed their mind.. how would that make m14 obstructing when they still agree to what they agreed about... you make absolutely no sense.. and as much as you try to sound smart you are failing on all counts.

Thumb mckinl 10 February 2014, 11:40

HA and Amal knew they had been tricked when M14 overstepped and nominated Rifi for the cabinet ...

M14 wants both security agencies to control enforcement and just as importantly the public relations for security.

There is no reason for rotation as the elections are only months away ... Watch as Salam is defeated and Suleiman made a fool.

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 10 February 2014, 13:04

Salam might and most probably will be defeated.. and his govt, once formed will be brought down.. but that is neither here nor there...
because the next one will fail as well.. from whichever side he is nominated.
now moving on.. and to the answer that i asked.. HA and AMAL were tricked into agreeing for the rotation of portfolios? is that your answer? or were they tricked "when m14 overstepped and nominated Rifi for the cabinet"?
if it is the second.. as you answered.. just answer the question for once... and stop posting predictions like you are Nostradamus... WHY DID HA AND AMAL AGREE TO THE ROTATION OF PORTFOLIOS AND THEN BACK OUT?????

and on a side note.. it is non of anyone's business who each side nominates... be it Rifi or anyone from m8.

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 10 February 2014, 13:05

oh and after HA and AMAL backed out of the rotation stipulation.. you come on here with the electricity cut upstairs and blame m14... wow..

Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 10 February 2014, 13:45

while i agree with your definition of Jumblat..
the main issue is that Lebanon needs a cabinet.. a govt.. to alleviate some of these pressures we are subjected to...
while junblat is one of the biggest thieves and i wholeheartedly agree.. so is berri... why are we not making this fuss about berri holding a services portfolio.. or a sovereign one?
let HA and Berri say that they still agree to the rotation which is not what they have been doing.. and state what their requirements are.. i.e. no both security portfolios in one camps hand... etc...
