Lebanon at Bottom of Rankings of Women in Parliament

Lebanon has come at the bottom of a ranking of women in the lower house or single house of parliament in The Women in Politics Map 2014, launched by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and U.N. Women.

The research, which was released on Tuesday, gave Lebanon a 3.1 percent of female representation, putting it 139th in the rankings.

There are only four women in the 128-member parliament in Lebanon.

At the bottom of the rankings are Micronesia, Palau, Qatar and Vanuatu without a single woman parliamentarian and 13 countries, with less than 5 percent female representation — Yemen, Oman, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Comoros, Lebanon, Iran, Belize, Tonga, Samoa, Haiti and Kuwait.

The research, showed the number of women parliamentarians at a record 21.8 percent globally, following a 1.5 percent increase in the past year.

IPU Secretary-General Anders Johnsson said 10 years ago he was predicting that even his children would never see gender parity in parliaments because progress was so slow.

But if the 1.5 percent rate can be sustained "we would reach gender equality, gender parity, in parliaments globally less than 20 years from now," he said.

In the ranking of women in the lower house or single house of parliament, Rwanda tops the list with 63.8 percent female representation followed by Andorra with 50 percent and nine countries with 40 percent or higher — Cuba, Sweden, South Africa, Seychelles, Senegal, Finland, Ecuador, Belgium and Nicaragua.

It's important to note that 75% of our women MPs are March 14 :)

3 are christian, one is Sunni from a party most M8 consider to be a Sunni extremist party ... they could not be more wrong.

Hezbollah never had a women candidate. They probably never will !

To put things into perspective, women presenters appearing on Hezbollah's Manar TV are all veiled when those on Future TV are not. Women who present on christian TVs are almost naked but thats another issue :)

Talk about extremism.

You have to give it to them though as they do let women present on TV...

Women will be the salvation of Lebanon. I think we should elect an all Women parliament. I'm sure they will change our country for the best !

roar,
1)When the best person for the job happens to be a man 98% of the time, then something is wrong with the culture/system..... this is like having the Assads win 99% of the vote for President.
Your quoting of Rwanda as an example does not support your argument. Yes Rwanda has the highest percentage of female representation in politics and that resulted in great improvements for the country ........... see part 2 for proof on this.

2) Current Economy and Economic Prospects

The country entered a high period of economic growth in 2006, and the following year managed to register 8% economic growth, a record it has sustained since, turning it into one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. This sustained economic growth has succeeded in reducing poverty, with growth between 2006 and 2011 reducing the percentage of the country's population living in poverty from 57% to 45%.The country's infrastructure has also grown rapidly, with connections to electricity going from 91,000 in 2006 to 215,000 in 2011.[6]

Honestly, Rwanda is a bad example. I understand your point and support the idea of having women represent. There was a horrible civil war, war crimes...for many years there not too long ago between Tutsi and Hutu tribes. After peace was made and the country hit bottom. they really had no where to go but up. To illustrate your point with more impact, lets talk about a country that is not coming out of a brutal war where people were slaughtered by machetes.

Seriously roar,
You were the one who used Rwanda as an example of how having more women in politics does not result in betterment of a country. Then I offer evidence of the contrary...... then you agree with zahle how Rwands is not a good example to use. I can understand zahle's spin on the topic, but your spin is a complete weaseling out of what you started (you borrowed a page from Jumblat's book). You sound like someone who would wear a suit with holes in his socks.
