The Air Traffic Controllers' committee announced on Saturday that it will partially suspend its work at the Rafic Hariri International Airport on Tuesday, to protest the new wage scale draft law.

"We cannot but protest to restate the demands of the air traffic controllers, whose technical specialties and particular skills are responsible for the safety of passengers arriving in and leaving Lebanon,” the committee said in a released statement.

The statement continued: “After we objected the draft and communicated with concerned parties such as MPs, parliamentary blocs and ministers in this regard, we expected that our demands would be reflected in the new wage scale proposal, especially since they all expressed that they understand our concerns.”

Thus, the committee expressed that it finds itself “obliged to resort to methods it tried hard to avoid.”

"We have decided to suspend some air navigation services that concern incoming and leaving flights, except those related to state airplanes and emergency cases.”

The suspension will take place on Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm.

"Other steps will be announced later in due time, and we will not back away unless air traffic controllers were treated fairly,” it assured.

"We apologize in advance for any unintentional harm that might result and affect passengers because of our decision,” the statement added.

The Syndicate Coordination Committee announced on Saturday that it will stage a strike on Wednesday over the officials' failure to refer the new wage scale to parliament for approval.

The SCC will hold the strike and stage a sit-in at Beirut's Riad al-Solh Square, it announced in light of the joint parliamentary committees' failure on Friday to finalize the discussion of the new wage scale.

It accused officials of yielding to pressure from the Economic Committees when it failed to refer the wage scale to parliament.
