Aoun Sends Message to Hariri that he Wouldn't Announce Candidacy without Consensus

إقرأ هذا الخبر بالعربية W460

Foreign Minister Jebran Bassil has reportedly told the adviser of al-Mustaqbal movement leader Saad Hariri that Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun would not announce his candidacy for the presidency if there was no political consensus on him.

During a meeting with Nader Hariri on Sunday night, Bassil, who is Aoun's son-in-law, said the FPM leader rejected his possible candidacy to be considered against the presidential bid of Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea.

Bassil asked Nader Hariri to inform the head of al-Mustaqbal and the former prime minister about such a stance, al-Joumhouria daily reported.

The newspaper said that the meeting between Bassil and Nader Hariri was held in the presence of several officials from the FPM and al-Mustaqbal.

It came after similar talks between al-Mustaqbal movement's envoy and Geagea in Maarab on Saturday.

Nader Hariri is expected to travel to Riyadh soon to brief the Mustaqbal leader on the results of his talks.

Al-Joumhouria quoted the movement's officials as saying that there was not yet a final deal within the March 14 alliance to consider Geagea as the camps sole presidential candidate.

“This needs more time and contacts to overcome the rest of obstacles in that regard,” the officials, who were not named, said.

Geagea's press office said Tuesday that he has also met with another Hariri envoy, former MP Ghattas Khoury, to discuss the presidential elections.

Monday's “talks focused on the importance of preserving the unity of the March 14 alliance at this stage to bring a single candidate from the coalition to the presidency,” the statement said.

Geagea announced last week that he would run for president, throwing the March 14 coalition in confusion after several of its officials said that the camp would have a single candidate.

God bless General Aoun.

Thumb -phoenix1 08 April 2014, 11:36

Karim bro, if let's say Geagea was allied to Hezbollah today, would you also be saying, God bless Hakim? The truth is that we humans tend to take God for granted, and we come up with things like God bless this or God bless that....Who are we to utter His almighty name when we know so little about the Almighty's WILL? people like Aoun, or Geagea or even Sayed Hassan are just mortals, humans. They fight for causes that can hurt an entire nation, and that leave deep scars on society. One can say, God bless Messi, or Ronaldo, or Barca, or Real De Madrid, fair enough, but to ask for blessings for politicians? How can we lend God will to human nature, do we owe Him or isn't the opposite more of the truth. Let such people repent and pray, and pray sincerely, for their sins are many, atonement does not come easy for such people, unless heaven is a very unfair place.

Not even the terror party supports your bid for presidency. You are not good enough for them. They want Franjieh, the illiterate.

Well said Aquaii, alas, the Lebanese will never learn. These two oligarchs, these two criminals, these two utterly selfish have caused so much pain yet, it seems feel that the last round wasn't enough, this time they want to finish what they started decades ago. As if it was wrong for us to heal our wounds.

Aoun allied himself with hizb according to an understanding paper with rules
who is doing alliance to save the country and who is doing alliance just to win in elections
god bless democracy

Thumb FlameCatcher 08 April 2014, 13:01

Democracy at it's best ! Aoun will only present himself if he's the only candidate because he's scared of competition or losing !

DICTATOR.

And all Aounies here are idiots to believe there is anything democratic or patriotic about Aoun !

Thumb FlameCatcher 08 April 2014, 14:48

Being the only candidate means obtaining power by force. Most dictators in fact obtained power without a single drop of blood.

Look at your Bashar for example ! A beacon of democracy is he ?

Thumb FlameCatcher 08 April 2014, 14:51

This is irrelevant. Each party must present candidates and a vote should take place.

In fact, each party must have their "leader" prior to parliamentary election on the basis of which they earn votes for their MPs. MPs are representative of the people and their party leaders when possible can be eligible as candidates for the presidency.

Our current parliament is obsolete however and should be replaced BEFORE electing the next president.

Thumb FlameCatcher 08 April 2014, 15:32

It's not hate. It's realising the truth after so many years.

I was and remain a Aounist to this day.

It seems Aoun is no longer a Aounist however and has lost his ways since he came back to Lebanon !

Thumb FlameCatcher 08 April 2014, 17:40

It's irrelevant because whether the president is voted by the people or MPs, the president is representative of the people.

The problem is the schedule of the current elections and the president being voted by an obsolete parliament.

In any case, any presidential candidate should be supported by parties and they should conduct public debates and present their "program" to the people.

In fact, presidents are normally "party leaders" and as such are the main drivers of votes for the party MPs.

So this is why I feel whether we vote directly or not is irrelevant. I do prefer voting directly but indirect votes should not excuse candidates from conducting campaigns and competing to bring a semblance of democracy to the parody of democracy that is lebanon.

Missing forces 09 April 2014, 00:15

but roar said " You are by far the chosen leader of the Christian sect" so it must be true. so why is he not enlightening us on his presidential agenda? before the vote? or doesn't he care? Is he just interested in making deals with the MP's to gain le brezidency without telling us what he has in mind? very democratic ..I think not..

Have you seen how I debate with our Shiite siblings? have I not been most frank with them, yet kept respecting them, Even them did not have your words for me. Thumb arzak-ya-libnan 08 April 2014, 18:53

Who is the Christian leader? Aoun? Who has about 40% of the Christian vote? M14 Christians including mustaqbal elected Christians who make up about 50%? We Christians are the laughing stock of Lebanon. We are as divided as divided can be. And everything is being done to ensure we remain weak and divided. Fpm MPs are inflated because of the Shia vote in jbeil and Baabda. M14 is inflated in the north. Aoun is not a strong leader because he us part and parcel of this division along with every m14 Christian leader as well. Jumblat is a strong leader because he united his people. HA is a strong party because it unites its people. And mustaqbal are strong because they also unite. Each of those parties are by far the strongest in their sect. What are we??? Nothing. Divided. And with all due respect. Divided because someone changed his orange book. Can you imagine what we could have been?

Brother Wolf, Bani is exactly as I described him, a softy gay with many machines and time to him. He keeps appearing under many aliases, but I noticed one thing, the one he originally used had to be kept intact, the Bani Maarouf one, or the one that reflected the Druze one, that was to be preserved, the rest? he made them under different names, but his knack and love for Geagea kept betraying him. The cream on the cake remained, his inherent and unmistakable hatred of the LF and Bachir Gemayel. I caught the gal long ago.

Thumb -phoenix1 08 April 2014, 20:50

roar , reality check brother " You are by far the chosen leader of the Christian sect" lets face it almost all aouny's love the very general aoun out of their hate for the Lebanese forces. He has not and will never be a benefit to Lebanon. In fact it has now become very evident his support base particularly amongst 18-35's is dwindling as they have come to see past his "I am greater then thou" speeches and realise he cannot deliver what he preaches. In fact his support base in my opinion is what is destroying the Lebanese as they choose to follow blindly knowing he leads them nowhere out of their spite for geagea and the lf. One could say they are cutting off their noses to spite their ace. This view is clearly demonstrated by the M8 marketing department on naharnet they feel compelled to go on the defensive everytime he opens his hole as they surely know he makes little sense and are not convinced entirerly.
