Jumblat Considers Taef Accord Needs 'Improvements'

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat expressed willingness to amend the Taef accord, deeming it a must to safeguard the Christians in Lebanon.

Jumblat in remarks published in As Safir newspaper on Friday said that improving the Taef accord would also strengthen the jurisdictions of the country's top Christian post.

He pointed out that the new Taef agreement would turn the head of state into a bridge that gathers the Shiites and the Sunnis in the country.

The Druze leader criticized Free Patriotic Movement chief Michel Aoun, saying: “his post and history are far more important than assaulting Jumblat.”

The PSP chief holds onto his presidential candidate Henry Helou, putting off any Christian criticism to his nominee.

Lebanon has been plunged into a leadership vacuum after Michel Suleiman's presidential term ended on Sunday with rival political blocs still divided over a new leader.

Over the past two months the parliament convened five times to try to elect a successor to Suleiman but failed during the last four sessions due to a lack of quorum.

Jumblat voiced hope that the rival parties wouldn't obstruct the work of the cabinet.

The presidential vacuum raised fears that it would affect Lebanon's power-sharing agreement under which the president should be a Maronite, the premier a Sunni and the speaker a Shiite.

The cabinet assumes the executive tasks of the president as stated by the constitution until a new head of state is elected.

H.K.

G.K.

why will he do that?
he has worked towards the destruction of the Lebanese state more than any other person, and you want him to do something good for the country?

I doubt he will ever do it :)

Thumb geha 30 May 2014, 08:54

My comment is about Aoun obviously :)

Good to see someone is mature enough to report my comment. No prizes for who :(.

As I said it appears aoun's backside is really sore First Hariri kicked him. Then his own alliance kicked him then jumblot kicked him. Ironically enough it is his worst nightmare in Geagea that always throws him a lifeline. He must have a soft spot for the elderly. Swallow your pride mr aoun and come back to the fold for even the prodical son will receive a warm welcome. If not for the sake of the little if any integrity you have left but for the sake of the country.

MR joumblat ,thank you for admitting that taef accord needs amending even if you denied it in the first place,
proportionality in parliamentary elections , and popular vote for the presidency (with more power to the president )

And you are in love with an egotistical maniac who caused the worst Christian massacre resulting in thousands of deaths for a cause then comes back to lebanon and desecrates their graves by his actions. Hmm

Flame the problem with aoun is that he is a populist politican. Half the time he said great things but on almost all occasions he does the total opposite. Words are cheap like his MOU. You need him to implement change not talk about it.

" Half of what I say is meaningless, but I say it so that the other half may reach you "
Meaningless is of course a subjective term still. Please wake up as to the credentials of Aoun and what good he's trying to achieve. Your comment about cheap words applies ONLY to Geagea and his friends given that almost EVERYTHING Aoun and his patriotic party have been trying to do have been stifled by political adversaries who ALWAYS come back to what HE says, like refugee sites along the border on Syrian ground, the taef, elections, etc.

So a man like Jumblatt who massacred thousands of Christians is now suddenly concerned about their welfare?

Thumb cedre 30 May 2014, 20:31

1000s ? i'm sure u can prove this...

Missing peace 30 May 2014, 20:10

loonie = yes, he never misses an opportunity to insult people ( i guess you take his habit!)

traitor = yes as he allies with an iranian militia and is syria's yes man, justified the use of hezbis arms against lebanese... the list is long of his treasons!

a syrian = of course , he is more syrian than the syrians and is always here to defend the regime he insulted for decades asking for its removal!
this makes him also a loonie to change radically his opinions on those he claimed to be terrorists but now they are his allies! i guess it makes him a terrorist too!

sure thingie you just follow blindly a mad man no wonder you are mad too....piece of garbage
