SCC Declares Strike at All State Institutions ahead of Wage Hike Session

The Syndicate Coordination Committee on Wednesday declared a general strike at all ministries and public institutions on June 9 and 10, holding “the MPs who obstructed legislation for several months” responsible for a possible postponement of official school exams.

Following a meeting at the headquarters of the association of state-run secondary school teachers, the SCC called on “the MPs who are expressing keenness on students and refusing that they be taken hostage to take part in the June 10 parliamentary session and approve the new wage scale draft.”

Revising the agenda of protests that it had recently announced, the SCC declared “a general and comprehensive strike across Lebanon at ministries, public administrations and institutions, municipalities, and the Grand Serail on June 9 and 10.”

The Committee also called for “an open-ended sit-in outside the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, June 11 at 9:00 am should the parliament fail to approve the new wage scale.”

On Monday, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab announced that official school exams would be postponed for five days pending a solution with the public sector employees and teachers who have threatened to boycott the exams over the parliament's failure to approve the controversial pay hike.

The SCC is a coalition of private and public school teachers and public sector employees.
