Bassil Slams Attempts to Hinder Electricity Project as Ministers Discuss ‘Technical Issues’

Energy Minister Jebran Bassil has accused cabinet members of “putting sticks in the wheels” of the electricity project proposed by his father-in-law Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun.

“Rather than putting sticks in the wheels of this project, we would have wished that they came to us to speed up its implementation,” Bassil told As Safir daily in remarks published Tuesday.

The minister was referring to Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat and ministers loyal to him who have expressed reservations on the draft law proposed by Aoun calling for the allocation of $1.2 billion to Bassil to generate 700 Megawatts of electricity.

Bassil reiterated that the project is cohesive and should either be implemented in its entirety or not. He also said that he is willing to find a solution to the crisis but would not make major compromises.

The minister did not attend a ministerial meeting held at the Grand Serail on Monday. Ministers Mohammed Fneish, Mohammed Safadi, Nicolas Nahhas, Wael Abou Faour, Ghazi Aridi and Ali Hassan Khalil discussed the electricity crisis in the meeting presided by Premier Najib Miqati.

Abou Faour told As Safir that the conferees discussed technical issues. He reiterated that the PSP has no political motive behind its demands for the formation of a technical committee that would oversee the implementation of the project.

According to An Nahar daily, the Grand Serail meeting didn’t reach conclusive results. Consultations are ongoing and the involved parties are still facing obstacles preventing consensus on the draft law.

Miqati’s sources also stressed to al-Liwaa newspaper that further consultations are needed to find a solution to the crisis. However, they said there was no deadlock on the issue.

Oops, he's pointing at his head again. Everyone hold on to their wallets.

The game is quite clear with this electricity issue. Bassil wants the money in his hand, without any audit or oversight from anyone, so that he can buy influence with it. Pure and simple, we can all see it and this guy is showing his imbecilic stupidity and ignorance by assuming that the rest of everyone else is as stupid as he is.

He has Hezbollah's guns behind his father in law who is behind Mr. Bassil to enforce his temper tantrum and in the end of the day, Hezbollah, which needs Aoun's cover will give in to this demand. Where the money will come from -- it will be borrowed and added to the national debt. Where will the money go --- some to electricity, but much more to arms purchases and more to be funnelled to the Assad Regime to keep it going. If Assad holds on to power, he will be beholding to Aoun and Bassil. If Assad loses power, then Christian people in Syria and Lebanon will pay the price.

Given Aoun's past political gambling record, picking Saddam, for instance, I don't give Christians much of a chance to win this gamble that Aoun is taking with their very lives.

He looks like playing russian roulette. Well he is hahahah. thats whats going to happen to him and his father in law. If you dont give me the money assad is going to kill me. assads money is frozen . the economy in syria is zero now. he has to pay salaries. there is no money going to syria . no tourrists. every thing is at halt. if he does not pay his army they will leave him. his money is hidden in lebanon. he cant touch it directly the only way to get it is inderectly under the table. Mr Jumblat sniffed it and knew it. He is tormenting the taoon and his son in law. unless they pay him. what a country. this monkey thinks he is god now i cant wait till the gov collapses and see where is he going to hide.there are more important things than the electricity people lived without it for years and used to it. first they should spend the money on the army why dont they do that? how are they going to pay the salaries if aoun and his ass in law empty the safe. thats another plan .

Mr. Bassil you need to grow up and stop throwing temper tantrums like a five year old who didn't get a cookie with his milk. Please step down and spare us your tired antics, we simply aren't that naive anymore.
