Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel lauded the roadmap established by al-Mustaqbal chief Saad Hariri, considering the “timely” initiative a push for the presidential elections impasse.

“Hariri's initiative came in time amid the ongoing vacuum and the local political deadlock,” Gemayel said in comments published in al-Mustaqbal newspaper on Monday.

He described the roadmap proposed by al-Mustaqbal leader as a “push for the presidential poll, for including a series of idea that would constitute a breakthrough if the political parties supported it.”

“The initiative was based on important components such as granting the presidential elections the national priority, which is very positive,” Gemayel told the daily.

Hariri delivered a speech on Friday during which he proposed a roadmap that includes the election of a new president, formation of a new cabinet that is similar to the current one, withdrawal of Hizbullah's fighters from Syria, and establishment of a comprehensive plan to combat terrorism.

He also urged against the extension of parliament's term, but remarked that parliamentary polls should take place after electing a new president.

Lebanon has been plunged in vacuum in the presidency since the term of President Michel Suleiman ended in May.

Gemayel said that the warnings that Hariri addressed in his speech should “prompt a lot of leaderships to exert further efforts to end the vacuum.”

“Hariri no doubt could salvage the state institutions that are suffering numerous risks.”
