Prime Minister Tammam Salam expressed his satisfaction with the cabinet's recent session during which it resolved a number of pending social and security issues, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Saturday.

He told the daily: “We decided to assume our responsibilities by resolving pressing issues through consensus.”

“We will resort to a vote should consensus fail to be reached,” he added.

Moreover, the premier remarked that the political powers should reach consensus if they seek to hold the parliamentary elections.

“The elections will be held if there is a decision to do so,” Salam stressed to al-Joumhouria.

Commenting on security in Lebanon, he remarked: “The situation is under control and we hope it will be bolstered through closely monitoring it and putting an end to unusual phenomenons.”

These phenomenons include abductions in the northern Bekaa region that “pose a challenge to the security plan if they are not tackled by a radical solution.”

“This can be achieved through constant coordination between the political, military, and security authorities,” stated Salam.

The cabinet approved on Thursday the contentious long-awaited Lebanese University file after agreeing on the appointment of deans and contract teachers.

The ministers also agreed on paying the salaries of public employees from the Budget's reserves after weeks of disputes.
