An Israeli infantry unit abducted on Wednesday a shepherd from the southern border town of Shebaa a day after two shepherds escaped when soldiers seized their flock of goats, the Lebanese army said.

The army and the state-run National News Agency said Ismail Khalil Nabaa was kidnapped and taken to the occupied Shebaa Farms area at dawn Wednesday.

U.N. peacekeepers contacted the Israeli army to secure Nabaa's release, NNA added.

U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon spokesman Andrea Tenenti told the news agency that force Commander Major General Luciano Portolano is holding contacts with the concerned sides to follow up on the abduction.

UNIFIL is working on determining the details of the incident, including where he was kidnapped, he added.

An Israeli force seized on Tuesday a goat flock that belongs to shepherds Mohammed Khalil Nabaa and Khodr Hamdan from the Sadana mountain heights in Shebaa.

The flock was taken to the Shebaa Farms but the shepherds managed to escape.

The Shebaa Farms, a mountainous sliver of land rich in water resources measuring 25 square kilometers, is located at the junction of southeast Lebanon, southwest Syria and northern Israel.

The area has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war and caught in a tug-of-war over ownership ever since.

Israel has previously detained Lebanese civilians in the disputed border region.
