Five bomb attacks, including four car bombings, killed at least 30 people and wounded around 70 others Wednesday in several Baghdad districts, Iraqi police and medical sources said.

In the deadliest strike, two near simultaneous blasts in the northeastern Shiite area of Sadr City killed at least 16 people and wounded 34, a police colonel told Agence France Presse. Medical sources confirmed the toll.

Another car bomb near a market area in the Ur district, north of Sadr City, killed at least eight and wounded 21, the same sources said.

In the eastern district of Baghdad al-Jadida, at least four were killed and 12 wounded, and further south in Zafaraniya, two people were killed and four wounded in a roadside bomb blast.

The Islamic State jihadist group seized large parts of Iraq's west and north in June, before stopping its offensive a few dozen kilometers from the Iraqi capital.

But violence has continued to wreak havoc in Baghdad, mostly in Shiite neighborhoods, with suicide attacks, car bombs and improvised explosive devices targeting security forces as well as civilians.
