A Syrian gunman was shot dead and two other people were arrested after they opened fire Saturday at an army patrol in the Bekaa town of al-Qaa, state-run National News Agency reported.

“An army intelligence patrol came under gunfire at the main entrance of the town of al-Qaa from three individuals who were riding a motorbike,” NNA said.

“The patrol responded in kind, killing a Syrian national, wounding another and arresting a Lebanese man,” the agency added.

It said the armed men's weapons were seized while the wounded gunman was transferred to the Hermel government hospital and the detainee to the relevant authorities.

On Wednesday, a Syrian man was arrested by the army in the northern city of Tripoli and a quantity of arms and ammunition was seized at his house, amid a continued crackdown on Syrians residing in Lebanon.

The border town of al-Qaa neighbors the town of Arsal, which witnessed deadly clashes last month between the Lebanese army and Syria-based Islamist gunmen.

In the wake of the gunbattles, army intelligence agents raided places of residence and camps inhabited by Syrians across all Lebanese regions, arresting many individuals after obtaining the authorization of the judiciary.

The fighting had erupted after the arrest of top Syrian militant Imad Jomaa, who has reportedly confessed that he had been plotting to establish an “Islamic emirate” in the North and the Bekaa in collaboration with dormant cells present in several regions.
