Army intelligence agents defused Friday evening a bomb weighing 250 grams near Martyrs Square in the southern city of Sidon, state-run National News Agency reported.

The army later issued a statement saying the explosive device was discovered by an intelligence patrol around 9:00 p.m.

The bomb “was armed and containing 200 grams of explosive material,” the statement added.

“A military expert arrived on the scene and dismantled the bomb as a probe was launched into the incident,” it said.

On Thursday, the army dismantled a booby-trapped car containing 100 kilograms of explosives in the Arsal area of Ain al-Shaab near Syria's border.

Lebanon has recently witnessed a string of deadly car bomb attacks linked to Syria's war, most of which were claimed by extremist groups operating in the neighboring country.
