Sayyah: Situation of Lebanese Christians Will Be Safeguarded with Election of President

Maronite Bishops Boulos Sayyah revealed that no new breakthroughs have been achieved in ending the deadlock over the presidential elections, reported al-Joumhouria newspaper on Thursday.

He told the daily: “The situation of Christians in Lebanon will be safeguarded only with the election of a president.”

“We have no fears over their fate however, but the situation is difficult and we need to be wary of the threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant,” he noted.

Addressing Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi's recent trip to the United States, the bishop said that his talks with American officials were positive, “but we are awaiting tangible results on the ground.”

Lebanon has been without a president since the term of Michel Suleiman ended in May.

The presidential deadlock stems from the March 8 and 14 camps' failure to agree on a compromise candidate.

The dispute has prompted the majority of the March 8 camp lawmakers to boycott presidential elections sessions.

The Maronite Bishops Council urged on Wednesday officials to abide by the constitution and elect a president, deeming their failure to do so in favor of holding legislative sessions as a violation of the constitution.

The sad part is the Christians are being used by ISIS and Hezbollah on both sides of the coin. No choice but being stuck in the middle of their religious blood feud, and if they speak up? We know what happens.

The sad reality is that the 4 millions Lebanese can't tolerate each other and do not want to live together....as long as this fact remains unchanged all other political creativities are nothing but sleeping pills.

I don't love them but I don't hate them. They are still Lebanese. If they would leave the liquor stores alone and not harass women at the beach in their areas I wouldn't mind them. My friend from Dearborn originally from Yaroun, his sister was recently there in the south, she was wearing shorts at the beach. Most of the women had their full hijab but were in the water. Some HA dudes with beards told her to get out because she was making their water dirty. Again, I have plenty of HA friends but I don't really appreciate their desire to make us ALL follow their way. I don't buy their moderate posturing. At the same time it's silly to compare them to Isis.

Thumb zahle1 03 October 2014, 13:11

I never resort to name calling and although I don't disagree with 100pct of their stance I would not vote for Aoun or his family. HA are no angels but if they were the same as Isis the Christian villages of rmeish, ain ible, even Jezzine would all be wiped out. Think about it.

Sayyah doesn't realize that Lebanon has it's own mini supreme leader now with all the un-handicapped powers given to him by God, who it turns out is a self anointed old dude forever croutching on a carpet over there in Teheran.

As long as idiots like you will keep on digging into history, the country will never move forward, why not mentioning the events of 1958, when you were not even born, since you're so fond of history.
