Army Continues Deployment in Bab al-Tabbaneh, Stages Raids in Akkar

The army on Tuesday reinforced its deployment in the northern city of Tripoli in the wake of the fierce weekend clashes with Islamist gunmen, as raids to arrest fugitives continued in the nearby region of Akkar.

Army units "are continuing their deployment in the areas of Bab al-Tabbaneh and the old souks in the city of Tripoli,” the Army Command said in a statement.

These districts had witnessed violent gunbattles that erupted Friday evening and only ended at dawn Monday when army forces entered Bab al-Tabbaneh.

Several militants have managed to escape but the army has vowed to press on with its crackdown, rejecting talk of any “settlement” with the militants.

At least 162 suspects have been arrested since Friday, according to the army.

Meanwhile, LBCI TV reported that “al-Ahram Street – which leads to the 'security zone' where Osama Mansour and Shadi al-Mawlawi were entrenched -- has suffered major destruction,” adding that efforts were underway to “remove landmines and debris.”

“The army's withdrawal from Bab al-Tabbaneh is out of the question during this period and the war will not end before the arrest of all fugitives,” military sources told LBCI.

Elsewhere, army forces carried out security raids in the northern regions of “Minieh and the Ain al-Samak ponds all the way to the forests of Akkar al-Atiqa, Akroum and al-Nabi Yousha in search for fugitive gunmen,” the army statement said.

“Thirty-three individuals suspected of belonging to terrorist groups were arrested,” it added.

According to state-run National News Agency, an armored patrol also raided places in the vicinity of the international highway in Akkar's Bhannine, “especially around the Lobnan al-Akhdar bakery and al-Siddiq hall.”

The highway linking Minieh to Akkar and the Syrian border was closed to facilitate the army's mission, NNA said.

Several troops were killed in Bhannine and al-Mhammara between Saturday and Sunday, in armed attacks led by Islamist cleric Sheikh Khaled Hoblos.

good job! let people know that only a bunch of thugs are tarnishing the image of tripoli a city where all sects coexist peacefully....

now next step disarming jabel mohsen i guess as the PM claimed that only legitimate arms should prevail....

Thumb Mystic 28 October 2014, 18:11

Jabal Mohsen was already disarmed months ago, they've been fighting these same takfiris, the army now have troubles with.

Only a Nusra sympatizer such as yourself, would prevent peaceful people to defend themselves against takfirism.

Missing peace 28 October 2014, 18:33

oh! jabel mohsen disarmed? good then... so let the army arrest wiam wahhab who openly said on tv he was setting up his militia!
don't you agree with the PM that all weapons should be in the hands of the army?

and if wanting that ALL weapons go to the army is being a nusra sympathiser then feel free to call me that...

we know that you refuse to obey the army and if ever the army wants to take hezbi weapons you d shoot at them like a brave fanatic islamist you are.... nasrallah said that, whoever wants to take their arms they'll cut the hands, didn't he? makes you much like the takfiris you bark after, no? LOL

Thumb Mystic 28 October 2014, 18:41

peace, you really are a fool. I have been saying for the past three years, long before the takfiris attacked, that they indeed would attack.
That was before Hezbollah intervened aswell, I actually told you that years ago, and we both knows that.

The army and Resistance are fighting the same takfiris, you dare to defend, but then again.

I always knew you were on their side, not the armies, not even Army command, are believing this garbage anymore, the Lebanese people aswell, has seen through your lies and deceit, you must admit, you've lost all credibility.

Missing peace 28 October 2014, 18:47

oh i defend the takfiris... well if it makes you sleep better at night to believe that then be my guest!

sure the only card of assad was to stir up the islamists like he always did... so that peoplehave only one choice: him or the takfiris....

he always played that game : lit up the fire then come as the saviour, but only blind people forget that and prefer to see hezbollah as the saviors! LOL

and just show me one post where i defend and cheer the takfiris? they are just one side of the same coin of islamist fanatism. hezbollah on one side and the takfiris on the other!

but your militia would shoot at the army with no scruples if ever the army want to disarm them, so shove your fake patriotism where the sun don't shine....you are just a hypocrit trying to play the proud lebanese when all you want is hezbollah to be stronger than the NATIONAL army.....

I hope that HA will act volontarely (without firing any bullet) to be only a political party by putting its fighting potential under the control of the Lebanese army. It may be a crazy dream but this is the best option for all lebanon. It will even give HA anonymous approval and popularity through respect not only fear.
