Abbas Accuses Hamas of Trying 'to Destroy' Palestinian Unity

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday accused the Islamist movement Hamas of trying "to destroy" efforts to broker national unity through a series of bomb blasts in Gaza last week.

Hamas quickly hit back, describing the allegations as "lies".

In a speech marking the 10th anniversary of the death of veteran Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Abbas said Hamas was behind the Gaza explosions which targeted leaders of his Fatah movement.

The blasts prompted the cancellation of a rare memorial service in Gaza for Arafat, the Fatah founder who died in mysterious circumstances in a hospital near Paris.

"Those who caused the explosions in Gaza are the leaders of Hamas -- they are responsible," Abbas said in the West Bank city of Ramallah, accusing the rival faction of trying "to sabotage and destroy the Palestinian national project."

Earlier this year, the two nationalist movements signed a reconciliation agreement aimed at ending seven years of bitter and sometimes bloody rivalry which saw the West Bank and Gaza ruled by separate administrations.

The deal led to the creation of a government of national consensus which took office in Ramallah but has yet to fully exert its powers in Gaza, Hamas's stronghold.

Following his speech, Hamas denounced Abbas as "sectarian and partisan."

"Abbas's speech is web of lies, insults and disinformation," said Mushir al-Masri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza.

"What the Palestinian people need is a courageous president."

Abbas also addressed the clashes which have gripped annexed east Jerusalem for the past four months and spoke about unrest at the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound triggered by the demands of far-right Jewish fringe groups for the right to pray there.

The Palestinians "will defend Al-Aqsa and the churches against the settlers and extremists," he pledged.

Abbas also reaffirmed his plans to submit a draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council later this month calling for an end to Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories by November 2016.

He promised that the Palestinians, who won the U.N. rank of observer state in 2012, would apply to join a host of international organisations if the resolution was blocked by a U.S. veto.

"We will not tolerate any pressure," he said, referring to U.S. efforts to dissuade the Palestinians from approaching the Security Council.

Mr. Abass, those who created Hamas are Israel and Iran, Hamas is here to impede the unity of the Palestinians and their very future. Hamas receives its salary from both Israel and Iran. You know it as much as we do so why pretend? You also know that Hezbollah too was created by Israel and Iran, and you can see, Hezbollah too is doing all it can to divide Lebanon and prevent to become a solid and stable state. You see?

The name of the Hamas spokesman, "Al-Masri", a typical Egyptian name, shows how much there the "Palestinian people" is an artificial bunch of Arabs unable to get along together, and not a local cananean people like Hebrews and Phoenicians are.

Kanaan, the name Al Masri is also a common name in Lebanon, particularly with our Druze siblings.

But the Druze know that Druzism appeared in Egypt, and are not ashamed of that. Arafat himself was an Egyptian who lived in Tunisia, until he was invited by Israel to join the West Bank -which was never a Palestinian State but a part of Jordan before 1967.

Abbas values are much better for a possible peace than the terrorists of hamas

Gaza should be part of Egypt back, West Bank to Jordan back, and this would mean stability. They are a bunch of different peoples unable to live from their work (they need international and UN funds continuously).

Hamas are hypocrites (Haniyeh's sister is treated in an Israeli hospital for instance) and Abbas is a weak man unable to take historical decisions. They are children and when you let them rule it is only chaos, like in Palestinian camps in Lebanon.
