Gemayel Considers Parliamentary Extension 'Flagrant' Violation of Constitution

Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel stressed on Wednesday that the extension of the parliament's tenure is a “flagrant violation” of all democratic principles, expressing regret that it was the result of political and constitutional heresy.

“Lebanon is passing through a dangerous political stage distinguished by the loss of balance as if the country is lacking logic,” Gemayel said in comments published in the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Siyassah.

He described the extension of the parliament's mandate as a “dangerous scheme that violates the constitution and the country's higher interest.”

Gemayel criticized those who are deluding the public into thinking that the presidential elections will be staged soon, saying that lawmakers are trying to coverup for their act.

“We still have a long way to go before carrying out the presidential elections.”

Parliament extended its term last week despite the boycott of several lawmakers, including Kataeb MPs. The extension was published in the official gazette on Tuesday.

The lawmakers, who voted in favor of the draft-law, claim they need to extend their own term in office because the security situation is too dire to allow holding elections amid Syria's civil war.

They also say extending parliament's mandate will prevent another power vacuum from forming in a country already divided along sectarian and regional lines.

Asked about the Iranian grant for the Lebanese army, Gemayel said that the Lebanese state “is ready to cooperate with all sides when the cooperation serves the interests of Lebanon.”

“The international law is impeding the Iranian grant due to the sanctions imposed on Tehran.”

Iran's offer of support follows aid packages for the Lebanese army from both its regional rival Saudi Arabia and the United States.

It comes as the Lebanese army is cracking down on gunmen in the northern coastal city of Tripoli after deadly gunbattles, and in light of battles with jihadists from al-Qaida-linked al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State group, who are entrenched on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal on the porous Syrian-Lebanese border.

Is that why you voted for extension it the first time?

Then you got your orders from saudi when your son was there to pretend not to support it knowing it will pass anyway? Why not enter an appeal to the constitutional council like the FPM has done on both occasions?

Also, the wahabi takfiris that killed your son are on the payroll of saudi, why dont you take a stand on that? Where is the testimony of the only witness to all the killings in Lebanon? Your sons bodyguard who escaped alive??

Why didn't FPM boycott the session like so there would be no quorum? Why do FPM PMs no resign and force new elections? Maybe because everyone wanted the extension while some are pretending to be against it.

Amin my dear Amin, when I look at the picture of Pierre, (Allah yer7amo), and I look at today with what's happening, I have only one hope, that you retire from politics, leave the Kataeb under the capable hands of your son Sami and that's it ya man. Sami is a lot better suited to the post and needs to be freed from your shackles, just retire ya akhi and leave the new generation to lead.

Phoenix, you cannot say let the new generation to lead whilst in the same sentence you endorsed Sami to continue from his father.

Its the family run business that kills any chance of Lebanon ever moving forward..you want new generation to lead? no probs..but it must be young men & women who earn it & not inherit it, otherwise the word new is void.

Hi Roar, yes, I do understand the spirit of your reply to my post and basically we're not in disagreement either. However whereas it pertains to the Kataeb, at the moment there's not much choice but to opt for Sami. Unlike his father, Sami is an open person very much attuned to our times and moreover Sami is a decent person who in fact sees far and beyond the current old generation. Furthermore, lest we forget, the Kataeb in the past were led for several years by non-Gemayels, but as I said, at the moment Sami is best suited to make the necessary transitional adjustments.

what is all the more scandalous is that they extended it for 2 years!

not just a few months the time to elect a president...
bunch of useless MPs paid to do nothing and vote laws in favor of them NEVER in favor of citizens....

FT, Roar, Slash, guys, may I suggest something in a fraternal way? Please, let's leave the personal thing aside, please, let's only talk of the thread in hand. We must elevate the forum to make it into a place where opinions are discussed, not personal matters, please gentlemen, if you may oblige, thanks.
