The Swiss museum that inherited a trove of long-hidden art from late German collector Cornelius Gurlitt has published a preliminary list of his collection.

Switzerland's Kunstmuseum Bern accepted the bequest Monday, while promising to work with German authorities to make sure any items looted by the Nazis are returned to their rightful heirs.

The museum said Thursday that "in the interest of transparency" it has placed a list on its website that will be updated as more information about the works is confirmed.

In 2012, German authorities seized 1,280 items from Gurlitt's Munich apartment while investigating a tax case.

Several heirs of former Jewish owners have come forward to claim works Gurlitt had inherited from his father Hildebrand, an art dealer who had worked closely with the Nazis.
