Syrian Navy Targets Lebanese Fishing Boats Off al-Arida, Detains Three Fishermen

The Syrian navy opened fire on Wednesday at Lebanese fishing boats off the coast of the northern Lebanese town of al-Arida, detaining three fishermen, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The news agency said that a fishing boat owned by Fadi H., who hails from al-Arida, was damaged but no casualties were reported.

NNA also reported that the Syrian navy seized another fishing boat, pulling it into the Syrian territorial waters.

The boat is owned by Khaled Hassan al-Rashidi from the town of Bennine.

Al-Rashidi was arrested along with Bachir al-Mishmeshani and a Palestinian national, who was not identified.

Angered by the incident, al-Rashidi's family called on the concerned officials to release the detained men along with the fishing boat, threatening to block roads.

The Syrian navy continuously opens fire at Lebanese fishermen off al-Arida coast, the latest in August 2013 when it released eight fishermen after their short detention.

In January 2012, Syrian authorities also released a Lebanese fishing boat the Syrian navy had seized after an incident in which a 14-year-old Lebanese boy was killed and two sailors were arrested.

Basil must be busy shopping.... no time for filing a complaint to the U.N. After all, he and the Syrians understand each other "through the eyes".

for decades israel has done this and worse, but you never complained. how come you just woke up now?

Great zinger mowaten yeah tell him, although, and don't take this the wrong way it's always nice to see one from your bee2a al 7aduna who actually can read-ish, you need to update your arguments a little, this is the exact same one used on the people of Asharafieh, Ain el Rimeheh etc when the Syrians were bombarding them in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Missing peace 24 December 2014, 16:58

don t worry... it is too difficult for their limited binary minds to understand that one can be against the syrian regime AND israel...

for them if you are against one means you are with the other... that's the way fanatics think... nothing new under the sun here...

@anony:

Please, that is not fair... When you speak about the mowaten of iran you need to remember how he resisted the Syrian occupation and broke through Syrian intelligence and ISF barriers and went to Martyr's square. He was roughed up by the ISF and suffered injuries. Then on March 8, he went to the same square and said " Shoukran Souria".

We definitely have a peculiar situation in Lebanon and it seems not intent to change. In the north we have a recurrent problem between the Syrians and our fishermen. In the south we have a recurrent problem between the Israelis and our shepherds. Can anyone figure that out?

Thumb ex-fpm 24 December 2014, 12:47

the logic would say then the Syrians like fishermen and the Israelis like shepherds.... LOL

Missing peace 24 December 2014, 13:45

but firing on fishermen in the north is OK by M8 standards as they are not with hezbis and it is bashar just defending himself lol... but it is a scandal to fire at sheperds in the South... go figure...

We do not know the whole story, might be the fishing boats smuggled weapons.

For the M14

"We do not know the whole story, might be the fishing boats smuggled weapons."

Any excuse to justify Assad's aggression towards Lebanon. This is not the first time they attack and kidnap Lebanese fishermen only to return them after beating them up or killing them. Yet, you pretend as if this is an one off situation. Even the article says the Syrian navy continuously opens fire at Lebanese fishermen. Shameless propagandist

i agree we do not know the whole story, just like when isrsael attacked fishing boats in the south syria is attacking fishing boats in the north same excuse might be the fishing boats in the south just like this one in the north smuggled weapons to terrorists like hamas and ezz ad-din al-qassam brigades.. according to the syrian regime and followers they are terrorists at least they were last year in damamscus yarmouk camp.

the mercenary jihadist unit brought from the 4 corners of the world by bashar assad in the first place to send to iraq through his border to allegedly fight the occupation because he thought he was a big regional player.

what could possibly go wrong?
