Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil has revealed that he referred 55 employees from the Real Estate Registry to investigation over corruption allegations.

Khalil told An Nahar newspaper published on Wednesday that he took a decision to stop the permits of all staff members tasked with following up transactions at the registry.

“I lifted the immunity off all employees at the registry to study complaints against them and take the necessary measures according to rules,” said the minister.

The biggest threat of corruption in that regard lies in the mismanagement of state property, he added.

On Tuesday, ten Real Estate Registry employees were charged with the squandering of public funds, the abuse of authority and accepting bribes.

The employees include real estate brokers, Registry secretaries, assistants, and other workers.

Asked about assaults on public and private properties, Khalil said he has handed over the files to the financial prosecutor to take the necessary measures.

His move against corrupt employees comes amid a crackdown by Health Minister Wael Abou Faour on food safety violators.
