Lebanon is bracing for another crippling winter storm that threatened to dump heavy snow and freezing rain as temperatures are expected to plunge to low degrees.

The storm YOHAN will batter Lebanon on Sunday afternoon as rainy skies with thunderstorms and active winds are expected to dominate the weather with temperatures taking a sharp drop and snowfall beginning at 1,500 meters above sea level.

The meteorology department at the Rafik Hariri International Airport said that Lebanon will be greatly affected by the storm YOHAN coming from western Italy.

Citizens and Syrian refugees in Lebanon were advised to take precautionary measures.

In January, a major storm “Zina” struck Lebanon, hitting refugees living in makeshift camps as many Syrians were trapped in their tents by snow, struggling to stay warm in temperatures hovering around zero degrees.

Heavy snowfall which reached an altitude as low as 500 meters cut several roads in mountainous areas of Lebanon as the ferocity of the storm compelled the closure of schools and the brief closing of ports and Beirut airport

More than 1.5 million Syrian refugees have fled across the border into Lebanon since March 2011, when the conflict in their country began.

The influx has tested Lebanon's limited resources, and this week the government began imposing unprecedented visa restrictions on Syrians in a bid to stem the number of arrivals.
