Report: Lebanese Authorities Reject Obtaining Russian TOS-1 Systems

The Lebanese state reportedly rejected a Russian offer to deliver to the Lebanese Army TOS-1 heavy flamethrower systems.

According to al-Akhbar newspaper published on Wednesday, Russian authorities expressed readiness, through direct and indirect channels, to deliver the multiple rocket launcher to Lebanon from a $1 billion Saudi donation.

The grant was announced by al-Mustaqbal movement leader ex-PM Saad Hariri in August.

However, the Lebanese authorities rejected the offer arguing that the range of the rockets doesn't exceed six kilometers and the system opposes human rights due to its highly destructive capabilities.

Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq, who is affiliated to Mustaqbal Movement, announced from Moscow on September 20 that the “Lebanese army will soon purchase new arms from Russia.”

The TOS-1 is a 220mm 30-barrel multiple rocket launcher mounted on a T-72 tanks chassis.

Several countries, including the United States and France had pledged to deliver arms and military equipment to the Lebanese army to bolster its capabilities as the threat from jihadists in the region grows.

The Islamic State, which controls several areas in Syria and Iraq, aims to spread to Lebanon as its fighters position in the outskirts of Bekaa towns bordering Syria and the Lebanese army is in adamant efforts to stop their efforts to infiltrate the country.

If foxnews, haaretz or hariri didnt tweet it, it never happened. That makes things very simple for him in his denial world

Thumb Mystic 18 February 2015, 15:32

Ofcourse the Lebanese Army didn't obtain any good weapons. They are denied to get that because of the U.S & M14.

U.S don't want the Lebanese Army to be equipped by Russians, for fear of Putins influence.

Where did you see this LAF statement?

Russian weapons lack efficiency (Syria as an example) where the only "efficient" weapons are those primitive barrels used against civilians

what are you on?

Ah dear FT, you're still using a one sided coin.

Thumb justin 18 February 2015, 11:47

Not everything revolves around aoun in this universe. The article is vague at best to be credible. But you jump to the conclusion it is Mustaqbal and/or the defense minister behind such action. It may be the whole article is baseless; it maybe the equipment is way too overprices, it maybe 10 other reasons.

Thumb justin 18 February 2015, 11:47

overpriced not overprices*

It seems flamethrower is upset coz the government rejected his TOZ missiles)

The Lebanese army can handle ISIS, but nobody wants GreenPeace on their back ;) :)
And we don't need tanks when we have air power......

The wonderful world of alakhbar were fantasy is passed for reality, the gullible masses belive.

Thumb the_roar 18 February 2015, 13:48

Can it be any clearer that Lebanon is rubber stamped to what grade of weapons it may or may not obtain?

Never mind, at least the Resistance of Lebanon will be around to assist the LAF whenever it requires it.

Thumb the_roar 18 February 2015, 14:31

FT's having another nervous breakdown! With each one another 5to6 new accounts he opens to showcase how his bee2at hadinat continues to tumble down the evolutionary scale, the Hominidae better look out.

...flamethrower-- says "quote us once as we say that, gaybartexas. JUST once."

Ok, I will quote you once, JUST once:

"..-flamethrower-.
"France is currently discussing with Lebanon the delivery of arms to the Lebanese military under a $3 billion Saudi grant."
another M14 lie in the light of what KSA said: they will not activate the grant without an (M14) president."

Thumb Mystic 18 February 2015, 15:42

Very true Southern, but ofcourse the Americans on this site will defend their invisible Saudi donations to their last breath. Even if they die of an old age.

Thumb Mystic 18 February 2015, 15:46

M14 are so pathetic. If it stood to them, all of Lebanon would be surrounded & under siege by da3ish/nusra by now, they do not want to engage the enemy, just sit and wait for them to arrive and accept themselves to Baghdadis fake "caliphate".

Good thing we have the Resistance, countering the takfiris before they could conquer Lebanon.

Thumb kanaanljdid 18 February 2015, 20:57

Well, it's perhaps because they think we don't need anymore flamethrowers :-D

Thumb kanaanljdid 18 February 2015, 20:59

"the system opposes human rights": what a joke, is this a weapon or not?
