Paul McCartney is extending a world tour with nine dates in Europe, including an emotional return to the Beatles' native Liverpool and a headline appearance at Denmark's Roskilde Festival.

The 72-year-old British icon will play his first shows in his native country since 2012 with three shows in May in London, Birmingham and Liverpool, he said in a statement Friday.

The first date -- on May 23 at The 02 -- will mark the former Beatle's 50th show in London as a solo artist.

McCartney will also be the major draw at Roskilde, one of Europe's largest music events, in his first time in five years on the continent's summer festival circuit.

The other concerts will take place between June 5 and July 9 in Amsterdam, Marseille, Oslo, Paris and Stockholm  -- all cities he has not hit on the "Out There" tour that opened in May 2013 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Organizers recently announced that McCartney will also headline the Firefly Music Festival, a growing music event in the eastern U.S. state of Delaware.

The "Out There" tour has been marked by giant screens and pyrotechnics, with McCartney playing a range of Beatles classics as well as newer songs.
