Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said that his ministry has come up with plans to resolve the problem of tap water at schools after Health Minister Wael Abou Faour revealed it did not meet health standards.

Abou Faour “didn't reveal something we did not know,” Bou Saab told al-Joumhouria newspaper published on Wednesday.

“We are aware of this problem and we came up with plans to resolve it,” he said.

“The schools that need improvement were put on specific lists,” he said, adding donations have been made from the European Union to resolve the water problem.

Head of Catholic Schools in Lebanon Father Butros Azar criticized Abou Faour for overgeneralizing, saying he should have named the schools where the water violates safety standards.

He stressed that private schools are keen on having clean water.

“The schools do not neglect this file,” he told al-Joumhouria.

“But surely the water used at the health ministry is not much better than those at schools because there is a single source for it which is the state,” Azar said.

He wondered where the responsibility of the state lied in resolving the problem.

On Tuesday, Abou Faour said that tap water at a number of schools did not meet health standards. He did not give further details.

He also revealed that large quantities of spices across the country were found to contain high levels of poisonous and cancer causing material.
