Health Ministry inspectors raided several supermarkets, restaurants and food chains in the southern port city of Sidon on Wednesday, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said that the inspectors destroyed 10 kilograms of “baladi” cheese at Spinneys, which is reportedly coming from Farm House dairy factory, and five kilograms of smoked turkey, from Center Hazem Mohammed.

A fine was issued against the supermarket.

The inspectors also destroyed a quantity of hamburger meat that didn't match the required criteria at McDonalds. The food chain restaurant was also penalized.

The Bsat supermarket in Sidon's Abra was also raided. Food inspectors destroyed a quantity of “baladi” cheese, banning the owner of the supermarket from importing cheese from the “Rolly Taanayel SARL” dairy factory in Sabtieh.

The supermarket was also fined.

The governor of the North, Ramzi Nohra, also inspected several shops that sell fish, meat and poultry in the northern city of Tripoli and al-Beddawi.

He also issued several warnings for the violating institutions to rectify their conditions within two weeks.

A candy shop was sealed with red wax in Zgharta's Mejdlaya from not meeting the required health standards, the National News Agency reported.

Health Minister Wael Abou Faour raised the alarm in October over food safety in the country. His campaign has forced the closure of restaurants, slaughterhouses and other institutions for violating the standards.

On Tuesday, the minister revealed that his campaign will include tests on spices, after some results showed them to be highly-contaminated.

The minister also revealed that tap water at schools did not meet health standards.
