North Governor Ramzi Nohra on Wednesday made a sudden inspection visit to the Motor Vehicle Inspection center in Tripoli, the second time in less than two weeks.

While at the facility, Nohra ordered security forces accompanying him to arrest a number of so-called “brokers”, who are illegal intermediaries who pass on bribes from motorists to the center's employees in return for facilitating inspection procedures.

The governor had inspected the same center on March 4, also ordering the arrest of several “brokers” and calling on the Ministry of Interior to establish more inspection centers in the North.

Separately, Nohra warned meat, chicken and fish shops in Tripoli's old souks and al-Beddawi area to settle their situations and meet the proper health standards within two weeks or face closure.

He addressed the ultimatum after inspecting the aforementioned shops escorted by a unit from the North's investigation department and Health Ministry inspectors.

“The sale of the meat, fish and chicken at the market is taking place without refrigerators. They are being displayed in open air to passersby, which subjects them to dust and pollution,” Nohra said after the tour.

“These goods do not meet any of the public health conditions, that's why we have warned everyone to abide by the health standards demanded by the Ministry of Health within a grace period of two weeks,” he added.

“All shops that do not improve their situations will be shut down,” Nohra cautioned.

The Ministry of Health had launched an unprecedented food safety campaign around three months ago, which has seen the closure of several restaurants, food shops, farms and slaughterhouses.
