Lebanon will celebrate in June the crowning of its ancient city of Jbeil as the 2016 Arab Tourism Capital, a title chosen by the Arab Council of Tourism.

Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon announced the event late Wednesday from the Grand Serail, voicing hopes that the security plan implemented in Lebanon paves way for the country to benefit from the event.

“To be able to work in the interest of Jbeil and the tourism season in Lebanon in 2016, we pray that the minimum level of stability and political consensus are preserved,” said Pharaon in a statement.

“The title will be officially declared on June 10 and a ceremony celebrating the occasion will take place on June 11 in Jbeil, “ the minister added.

Municipality chief of Jbeil Ziad Hawwat stated on Thursday that the municipality embarked on the development of strategic plans to welcome visitors to the city and provide them with the best services available.

It's not the first time that Jbeil, also known as Byblos, wins such a title. In 2013 it was chosen by the World Tourism Organization as the best Arab Tourist City.

Moreover, the Wall Street Journal featured this year's Byblos Christmas decorations and its 97-foot-tall tree in a photography piece about Christmas trees around the world.
