Russian Tourists Hit by Lightning on Crete

A Russian woman was in serious condition Friday after her tourist group was hit by lightning as they sheltered under a tree at an archaeological site on Crete, police said.

The 36-year-old woman suffered a heart attack but was revived by medics before being rushed to a local hospital.

Another 14 Russian tourists were more lightly injured after the thunderbolt hit the tree under which they were taking shelter, during a freak storm.

The lightning strike happened on Friday as the tourists toured the palace of Knossosm, a 3,700-year-old Minoan site excavated by British archaeologist Arthur Evans in the early 20th century.

Police are investigating why the site, one of Crete's premier tourist draws, was allowed to remain open during the storm.
