British Ambassador Recalls UK Waste Crisis in '70s
British Ambassador Tom Fletcher has stated that a waste crisis similar to that of Lebanon had contributed to the ouster of the UK government in the seventies of the last century, As Safir daily reported on Monday.
Answering a question on the waste crisis and how the UK would have reacted Fletcher said: “The trade unions decided back then to work for three days per week only, which led to the accumulation of waste in the streets of London. That outraged the people and triggered a series of popular protests which led to the fall of government.”
Expressing sorrow at how the Lebanese people never act against issues that upset them, he said: “The Lebanese are upset by the mistakes they see, and they never stop complaining but they also never take action to change the course of things and this is very sad.”
Lebanon has been plunged in a waste-management crisis since July 17 when the Naameh landfill, that receives wastes from Beirut and Mount Lebanon, was closed.
Involved officials have so far failed to find a permanent solution, and efforts are focused now to find a temporary one.
